1999 Case 580 Super L Wont start, odd problem.

I'm working with a friend that has a Case 580 Super L. He was driving it to the garage and it just quit. No prior issues. The engine just stopped.

When we try to start the motor it wont start. BUT when we try to start AND operate anything hydraulic the tractor starts and runs fine as long as we continue operating something hydraulic. We dont have any diagnostic books or schematics to help figure out the problem.

Any thoughts?

As you probably figured out by now, you have a "parasitic load" on the engine.. the hydro system is lugging the engine & when u operate the hydros, it takes the load off..
Sorry I'm no help w/ WHERE or HOW it's doing it.. but sumpin's stuck open..
I would suggest getting a service manual.

Ok, Thank You. Unfortunately, I'm an automotive mechanic, not a tractor mechanic. I can work on fuel, electronic and engine systems no problem but the hydraulics I've not done much with. I do need the manual and may buy one when I get to New Mexico.

I'm assuming at this point that the hydraulics may be causing the load because when you operate them the engine starts just fine. Would anyone know what could be stuck to cause a load or slow crank?
