1999 G1900 help!! (glow plugs and hour meter)

I bought my 1999 g1900 a few weeks ago and love it!! I am have a problem trouble shooting the glow plugs. I have no power to the glow plugs and the light wont come on. I checked the glow plug wire (blk/red) the runs from the glow plugs to the harness under the dash and that wire is good. If i turn the key switch to the glow plug position and run a wire from the positive side of the battery to the glow plugs they will work and the light in the dash will come on. What could it be?
My last question is what would cause the hour meter to stop working or how to check it?

You may have lost power to your glow plug controller and hour meter... Check fuses, remove and check for clean contact... KennyV
