I just bought a Cud Cadet 1046vt. I see it recommends an oil change after 5 hours. It does not mention the filter. Would I be better off changing the filter also, or is this overkill at 5 hours.

Thank you.

change 'em both. That filter catches all that left-over mfg grit from inside the engine crankcase and also whatever is shaved loose while the engine breaks in those first few running hours...

I have a cub cadet 1042 ltx . basically same tractor but with a 19 hp kohler engine and a 42 inch mowing deck. I would double check your manual as it recomends changing the oil and filter every 50 hours not 5.

best read that manual again - you'll find that it calls for a new engine's oil to be changed at much lower hours than 50.

after that, the oil change intervals will be greater.

I read it again and it says to change the oil and filter every 50 hours.

and for the ltx 1046 vt:

B.T.W. If you compare the hours to a vehicle;50 hours times an average speed of 60 MPH
equals 3,000 miles, which is the recommended oil change for most vehicles. Changing the oil every 5 hours is almost like changing the oil in your vehicle every 300 miles

And also I have a 2004 Kubota that stated to change the engine and transmission fluids and filters after the first 50 hours
and then every 100 hours after that. And after 6 years it is running great with no oil usage.

I second that. I've read a lot of the Cub operator manuals and they vary from 5-24 hours for the first oil change and from 50-100 hours for regular changes depending on the engine. If his manual says 5 hours then I'd do it and make sure you note it and all service with date/hours in the back of the manual in case you ever need warranty service. I even save the receipts for the oil and filters just to back up what I wrote.

change the oil and filter with each oil change. the 50 hr point is most likely the regular interval with 5 being the break-in interval. i know with cars after a cam swap, you change the oil after 20 minutes of run time at an elevated rpm. even if the owners manual doesnt say to, i would definately do something around 5 hours to get rid of any sludge from break in.

To clear things up a bit, it's the Briggs and Stratton manual that came with the tractor that says to make the initial oil change at 5 hours.

i would change the filter too. its on a little bit of money in the grand scheme of the life of the mower.
