I picked up my new toy on Tuesday of last week and immediately had to go out of town for work so I did not get a chance to test it out until this weekend. Logged a total of about 6 hours total time on Saturday and Sunday. I have included a shot of tilling between the rows of my crop. My neighbor in town said it is the Swiss Army Knife of tractors. Compact, red and does everything. So far so good but I do have a couple of squawks that need some attention. I guess it is 25 years old and I should expect a couple things to not work exactly right. I will address those in another thread and seek some advice.

Thanks

Kendall

Upon further thought, is it reasonable to expect a few things to not work right or should everything work as it originally should. Here are the things that I have problems with. 1. Significant leak in the front right wheel seal. 2. Diff lock may not be operational. 3. Fuel shut off valve is stuck in the open position. 4. Brakes have a lot of pedal travel. 5. 3 pt raise and lower valve will not turn. It is rusty.

There is a strange satisfaction in fixing your own tractor. I thought I would like using it more than working on it, but I find myself expanding the list of things to "fix" with more zeal. I might end up in tractor rehab from family intervention soon:)

You should talk to Stan right away. This is where the reputable dealer part comes in. I agree with Jerry about the satisfaction of doing my own fixes, but front seals and differential locks are pretty important stuff. Should be no problem to adjust your brakes, there are some good posts about it in the archives, but you should have some sort of warranty period. That is why you paid a premium over what you may have purchased your tractor for from some "Roadside Vendor".

That's why you should try them out before you buy and point out any problems to the seller. All but the wheel seal should be easy fixes. You do need to be a wrenchy type to own/operate a gray market tractor.

Yes, I agree that it is important to check everything out before you take delivery. Obviously, I knew about brakes and the rusty valve, and I thought no big deal since those appear to be an easy fix. The inside of the front wheels were completely dry and there was no sign of a leak. I did give it a pretty good work out before I took delivery. I get it on the trailer and drive home to find about a pretty good puddle on the trailer floor. After some use, the leak seems to be getting worse. On the differential lock, I could not really tell until one wheel lost traction while I was operating the tractor.

The differential lock does not work until one wheel loses traction, At least on all tractors I've had with differential lock.

Eddie,

I guess I should have been more clear in my response. When I was testing the tractor, I had all four wheels getting good traction on level, solid ground so I could not tell if the differential lock worked.

When I was using it for the first time, I high-centered it and had the left wheel off the ground about an inch and spinning. When I stepped on the differential lock lever, the left wheel would continue to turn and the right wheel would not move. I am under the impression that by locking the differential, power is equally distributed to both rear wheels and that was not the case. On other equipment that I own, that is the way the diff lock works. I guess, I will have to figure out what the problem is.

Thanks

That's the way mine works. One wheel starts spinning, stomp the diff lock and both wheels spin then. Mine is pretty hard to engage, have to stomp pretty hard.
