I don't need to worry about this now but the thought hit me while I was putering so here ya go.

I just finished planting 230 Nellie R Stevens Holly trees along a fence line....lot a fun there but the BX25 made it doable. Averaged 7 trees an hours

My question is if you mix up some 2,4-D weed killer in the appropriate amount for weeds will that mix hurt/damage/kill trees...especially little 2' baby trees. :)

I have my water wagon coming and I can see in the future of loading it up with herbacide, insecticide and fertilizer and only making one pass....man will that be sweet. :licking:

The 2,4-d may damage or kill the trees. I use 2,4-d ester mixed with diesel fuel as a basal application to kill trees up to 4 inches by coating the lower 2 feet of the bark.

Yep, I've made a modified version of weed killer myself.

But, I was wondering if just mixing it per the instructions for weed control only, would be a weak enough solution to NOT hurt trees...especially my little Hollies.

I think if you mix 2,4-D up stronger you can take out poision Ivy and the like but just a weed kill dilution, I'm not sure how it would effect trees & shrubs.

The weed strenght will kill big 12'' inch elm trees. Do not know about your hollys, but I am aware that I have killed some Elms.

One of the two ingredients in 2,4-D is triclopyr. It will kill trees if sprayed on them in the dosages listed on the label. Read the MSDS and the Specimen Label it should tell you what to avoid contact with.

2,4-D is not tree friendly. It may not kill larger trees, but, is not good to spray on them. It will kill smaller seedlings and some larger.

I've killed some 8 ft maples with esther 2,4-D sprayed nearby in the spring. It killed the buds. Evergreens showed minimal impact.
For the yard I have recently switched to amine 2,4-D and I restrict my use to fall and then only with a droplet sprayer. No fine mists and never spray on a dead calm day.

Hollies are tougher than most deciduous trees but having said that, you have way too much labor invested in them to take the chance. At the very least, it'll make them sick and a second application should just about finish them off. I use it on the pastures and if there is any kind of drift, you can see it on the big trees. It doesn't kill the trees but you can sure see it it on any leaves that have been contacted. I also use it to kill honey locust trees. It's bad stuff.

Thanks for the replies.

I use the Amine version also, from the local Farm and Home supply Orscheln store.

I like the 2,4d because it works and it breaks down quickly.

Any good weed killer out there that is tree friendly?

I don't think there is such a thing. The manufactures don't recommend you to use the weed and feed products if you have trees. I guess if it isn't grass it's a weed.
