Had two blow-outs within an hour of each other on my Mission tires. Trailer never overloaded and less than 5,000 miles, and 5 years old always protected form the sun. I am **** about tire pressure. Lucky I carry 2 spares. Had the 2 spares replaced in Kentucky at truck stop. Beyond the cheap "Chinese tire" comment (they were not cheap) he said they were 5 years old? Two questions: How often do you replace your tires (I have 5 other trailers and never this problem), and can anyone recommend a 235/80R16E tire?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to tires. I deal in trailers and I will not tow a trailer anymore with Bias Tires or with tires over 6 years old.

Were this Bias?

As for tire brands stay away from Carlisle and GoodYear Marathons. All we run is GreenBall Towmasters, Maxxis, and Gladiators. Never a issue with them but all the others are hit or miss.

I change my tires after 6 years no matter the miles. I am venturing to guess that your trailer tires are older than the trailer. Very common for manufactures to order a large quantity and have them sitting around. I will not accept a new trailer with tires older than 12 months old. All tires have a date code on them. Its something like this example. 0907. In this example the tire was built in the 9th week of 2007. Another example is 3409. In this example the tire was built in the 34th week of 2009. You get the drift. It can be found on one side of the tire only usually. Its almost always in a oval about 1.5" long and .5" tall.

Take a look at your tires.

Tires were date coded same year as I bought the trailer. 5 years old. They were radials. Heard good things also about the brands you mention other than the Gladiators. Thanks

Same side? Road damage to both? Inflation? Overload from the loss of the other tire?

One on each side. The fronts or lead tire. Luckily did not take out rear tire either time and I was in the right lane. One hour apart into a 500 mile trip after 400 miles or so. Now I have two Hi-Run Chinese tires as spares. I hear they are junk also. Will replace all 4 main tires before I go on the next trip. Talked to Greenball Rep. this week. Maxxis has 80lbs per tire less load. Will check into Gladiators as DiamondPilot mentioned. Air pressure and loads always good. I am fanatic about setting air pressure on cold tires. Not road damage. Tires failed from inside. Both tires had crumbly rubber inside of them.

I think the best way to describe most trailers tires = 'will-pop' NOT a may-pop, but a will-pop LOL

When we bought a popup camper years ago I had all 3 of the original tires that were only a year old blow out in one summer (2 on one return trip from the beach and causing $800 damage)..

My wife laughed when I bought a spare for the spare, but on the return beach trip she understood why I had a spare-spare.

As an FYI - the camper had Carlisle on it.. BUT when I filed a warranty claim, they forwarded it to GoodYear - which was the sub contractor that made the tires for Carlisle.. BUT they did pay the claim..

If it was both front tires two things come to mind. First what type of suspension, and second, does the trailer sit absolutely level?

On torsion axle trailers I see two or maybe three times the tire failure. Reason being, no load leveling capability like with leaf springs. We had a customer that had lots of tire issues on a tandem torsion unit. After careful weighing we discovered one axle was carrying 70% of the load and the other axle only 30%.

If not sitting level it will also transfer more load to the lower sides axle.

Are these tires ST trailer service tires or just 235-80-16 tires. I was able to buy either when I bought my tires

They were ST tires, load range E. Trailer level and balanced but I was thinking I should go to a scale next time. On a 25' 14,000 LB trailer I believe the front axle will always carry more load. Having said that, I always strive for a balanced load. Weight of trailer and load was approx, 12, 000 LB which is what is typically on this trailer (tractor, FEL, couple of implements, and two quads). Suspension is slipper leaf springs kept well greased. My four horse Gooseneck and 21' enclosed trailer have torsion axles. Never had a problem with those. My 21" has more than 15,000 miles with Goodyear Marathon's made in Canada. LT tires on the horse trailer. I also always carry two spares.

Yep, sounds like you may have a axle/tire overload condition.
