Hi folks - my first post.

I just bought a leinbach 82-12 two bottom plow. I didn't get a manual so I'm setting it up from info I can find on this website. I am also a newbie to sodbusting.

Would someone who knows take a look at these pics and tell me if my colters are in the right or wrong positions?

I have them set so the blades line up with the leading edge of the shares. I'm wondering if they are too high and should be lower. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Yes, the coulters should line up with the cutting edge of the shin.

The coulters should be set to cut the sod through the roots.
Depending on the type of grass, probably 4 to 6" deep should be enough.

That measure depends on how deeply the bottoms are set to run. That is why the coulters are made to be adjustable.

Not much help, I know. But once you get the plow in the ground it will all become clear.

They're way too high. The deeper they cut the easier the plow will pull. What will probably limit you is their diameter, drop them down until the mount is close to the ground at plowing depth.

It's a lot of trial and error, really. Personally, I set my coulters to run on the outside by about an inch, and generally they run about 3-4 inches deep. Play with it. Go slow, watch how it runs. Stop, readjust, try again. It's really a lot of fun. Subtle changes can make dramatic differences. Love watching the dirt roll off the plow!

Manuals can tell you how to make the adjustments and what they will do, but everything depends on the individual setup you're running. You could set your plow up perfectly, and on another tractor it wouldn't be worth a ****.

The coulters should be lower and closer to the plow shin. I like them set about 2 inches in front of the plow shin. Ken Sweet

Hard to tell at least for my eyes but I'd say your coulters are a wee bit too high. Also me myself would put my center link on the top hole. Also on that type of plow which looks like it has very little welds if any I would check to make sure all bolts are tight after a pass or two espeiacially those U-bolts. ;)

It's not easy to see in my picture, but the coulter should be low enough to cleanly cut the sod and grass roots. There has to be a "throat" between the shin and the coulter to allow soil and rocks to pass through, otherwise it'll clog up on you.

For a 12" bottom, your typical plowing depth is 6" (half the width), so allowing for 2-3 inches of sod, the bottom of the coulter wheel should be 3-4 inches above the bottom of the plow share.

Once the plow has bitten in and is at full depth, stop and measure the actual depth you're plowing. Adjust the draft accordingly until you have a good setup. Too deep and you plow up hardpan and the sod wants to ball up, too shallow and you don't roll it over good.

My plow has tails on the ends of the moldboards to help flip the sod over, you might not need them. Your coulters do look a bit high to me, too.
