I watched the video thinking to myself, "Where have I done a similar action?"

:duh: My wire-strainer for fencing!

Love it.

Sent to a friend who has two draft horses.

Pretty much have to sacrifice the anchor tree. Skinning bark off all the way around...not good on that.

Look closely - at 2:33 the horse on the right has a loose and dragging hind horse shoe. Further into the video - 5:20 - you can see, it's giving the horse difficulties.

Very interesting and enlightening.

Observations -
- the horses were very well trained and most patient
- the damage to the driveway and "leverage tree" guarantees future projects
- time must not be a great concern
- modern stump grinders are a God sent implement for all participants, including the horses
- the removal of stumps must be of critical importance - otherwise, let them rot - a lot of effort for the removal of an 8" stump
- one area where modern technology is a definite help

For sure!

I was surprised at how much damage was done to the ground. Use of a padded strap may eliminate girdling.

- time must not be a great concern
I had the same thought. But then again, in relation to your next statement, it's a whole lot faster than letting them rot! :D

Well if you are clearing a wood for planting corn, by the time the stumps rotted you'd be dead (from lack of food).

- one area where modern technology is a definite help
What's amazing to me is that it could be done. Like the Egyptian pyramids.

We had a horse logger pull out the timber for the first 5 courses of our log home with his team of Belgians, Jack and Andy.
The training of his horses was obvious from the start. They worked in unison and wanted to pull their hearts out.
A skilled teamster at work is a pleasure to watch.
oosik: I am guessing they were clearing land in the great forest in order to grow food, so it probably was of import.
And yes we have all pretty much succumbed to the ease of tech.

I used to see the old tripod-style at Fall fairs.

Maybe a bit more work to setup, but delivered a direct vertical pull.

Pioneers had to use the principles Archimedes laid down.
