I just bought a 2 row planter made out of allis chalmers 72 units and I want the spacing at 38 inch rows. Here's my problem, that is putting the planters right behind my tractor tires. Does anybody see any problem with planting within your wheel tracks? To much compaction for the planter? I will be using a DX 29 Case tractor. The reason I want 38 inch rows is because I will be using a farmall H with 2 row cultivator to keep the weeds down. I will be planting sweet corn, bush beans, pumpkins, sunflowers, watermelons with the planter and the soil will be worked with a disc before planting. Planting pumpkins and watermelons with only seed in one planter. I guess I could add a few harrow teeth to the planter tool bar to take out my tracks before the planter. I have till next spring to get this figured out. Just looking for some other opinions.

Your tire width and spacing is a definite concern with a cultivator... not that much with the planter, provided the planter will set rows the cultivator will work.
Compaction on a small two row planter should not be any problem... KennyV

thanks for the reply

Let me re-phrase my question a bit.

Will the planter still plant correctly if planting in the wheel tracks of my tractor? It is not a no-till planter. It is a disc type planter. I was just wondering if the compaction of my tractor ahead of the planter is not going to allow the planter to plant properly. If it's not going to plant correctly, should I add some spring teeth to the tool bar ahead of the planter to scratch the soil a bit?

Ideally you don't want to plant in your wheel tracks. A way around this is to change the wheel spacing on your tractor. I don't know what your plans are or how much your going to plant but if it is only a small bit then try it and see how it grows. Your tractor may be light enough to not cause any problems, plus you can get track eliminator mounted on the planter to cultivate the soil directly in front of the planter unit and then it won't matter as much.

You could pull the planter with a slight offset to get the rows out of the wheel tracks.

Planting in the wheel tracks will work fine one year and shaft you the next, it just depends on the conditions at planting and the weather that follows.

I would try not to plant in the wheel track.

thanks for the info.

Going to have to give this some thought. I am not able to change my wheel width of my case dx 29. Here is a thought I do have. I do have a two row cultivator, front mount, for my farmall H. Thinking 'bout mounting the planters to the sides of my H. Using a hyd lift for the planters. One planter on each side of the tractor, in front of rear axle with the lifting from the front. Then I know I would not be planting in wheel tracks, since that would be the same tractor I would be cultivating with. It would be a good reason to fire up the plasma gun and welder. If I go that route with my idea, I'll have to post some pics.

Thanks again for the info guys

why not an offset hitch similar to what they do with hay rakes hooked in tandem? The most you may have to do is extend the driveshaft a little. An offset hitch could be made with very little effort.

Does the planter have markers? If not it would be hard to gauge your spacing when you turn around at the end and go back ... I plant with 30 inch rows using a two row, my wheels are spaced at 60 inches, thus when I turn around I follow the tractor tire marks and maintain the 30 inch row spacing ... can your cultivator be adjusted to narrow rows and adjust your planter to match?

Just add another planter unit to your planter and have a three row planter. Then your 38 inch cultivator will work just fine with your tractor. I sell a bunch of the deere 71 planters and that is what I usually do with that size of tractor.
