20 Hp kohler engine takes forever to warm up in cold weather-

Guys - My cub cadet Volunteer with the 625cc engine continually stalls when cold- choke on or off takes forever to warm up-do I need to raise the idle, if so how??- also I think it runs a little rich as it smells like gas and has gray smoke coming from the tail pipe??- thanks for the help-

If it's running too rich that could be the whole problem. Your carburetor float could be sticking or you could have internal carburetor problems. On the other hand it could be a timing issue. You could start with the simple stuff first - a new spark plug and a new air filter.

Does this engine have a model and spec number? You can't increase the idle too high obviously or you will be fighting the clutch. What temperature is this occurring? How fresh is the fuel?

Agreed with Roadworthy. Leaning it up will make the engine run warmer. If no float or needle problem, put in the next size down main jet and take note of the result.

A question, I'm not familiar with your model but it sounds like a manual choke.
If so have you tried just partially opening the choke.
Used to have to pull chokes clear on to get many gas tractors started, once they started
could slowly start pushing the choke cable back in opening the choke butterfly.
It would take several minutes sometimes to get a choke fully opened,
but it would be less then half choked much of the time.
