Several, all used and abused.
I have a Mansaver T Post pounder that requires 20 Weight Hydraulic Oil. I just got it this year and I've used up almost all of the 8 oz bottle of oil that it came with. To order another bottle from them will cost $5 for the oil, and the cheapest shipping is $20

When I search on Amazon, I get several hits for Jack Oil. Some of them say 20 weight on the description, but nowhere on the bottle, or in the details. I've been to several auto parts stores to see what they have, and nobody has 20 weight hydraulic oil. Some say it's 32 weight, but it doesn't say anything on the bottles.

I've tried the Atwood's Feed Store and Tractor Supply.

Is there anything else that uses 20 weight hydraulic oil that I could search for?

Is there a way to figure out what the weight is for Jack Oil if it's not on the bottle?

Ideally, I'm hoping to find it locally so I don't have to pay for shipping. Amazon has a few possibilities, but the price increases dramatically with shipping, and even without shipping, it's a lot more money then what it is on the shelf at the auto parts stores that I've been to.

Thanks

20W oil is compressor oil. Red oil is 10W and motor oil is 30W, if you have to have 20W, why can't you mix those two oils. That is exactly what they do to make it. They use hydraulic oil before it gets dyed red. I've always mixed, never bought 20W oil.

Thank you. On their website, it says not to use compressor oil because it's too thick. I didn't know that you can mix it. Since this is a tool that I plan on using a lot to install all my T posts, I really want to find a quick and cheap place to buy the oil for it since it goes through a fair amount of it.

The 8 ounces that came with it did about 100 T posts. When the ground softens in the Fall, I should be able to get them in faster, and use less oil, but for now, I'm dealing with super hard red clay that is being baked harder with every day of Summer.

Do a google search. I found lots of auto stores that sell 5 gal buckets of it for $70. Apairently it a aw68 grade oil.

according to mobil oil site

AW 68 Hydraulic Oil

AW 68 Hydraulic Oils contain a zinc anti-wear additive that is designed to protect hydraulic systems and equipment by reducing wear. The quality of the base oil controls corrosion, oxidation, and suppresses foam and aeration. AW 68 hydraulic fluids have an International Standards Viscosity Grade or ISO VG of 68. This is the thickness of the fluid tested at 40 degrees Celsius. ISO VG 68 is on the heavier side for a hydraulic fluid which flows equivalent to a SAE 20 weight lubricant. This might be beneficial in systems that are prone to leakage at higher temperatures.

You might check at a hardware store. Nail gun oil can be bought in quarts. It is pneumatic oil.

It's kinda like you can buy a pint of power steering oil for ten dollars, or a quart of auto matic transmission oil for three dollars. While the dipstick itself says either oil will work

we dont have clay here, but if i try to pound t post late summer, its like pounding them into rock. If i do fencing in early spring, man what a difference.

and im too cheap to use anything besides manual t post pounder.

When I clicked on your link, this was listed as 20W Hydraulic oil!! I think this is what I'm looking for.

Thank you

Now I'm not sure about that Hydraulic Oil. I looked for it at other stores since it's not in stock locally, and it shows different weights for the same product.

Now I'm leaning towards Sta Lube Jack Oil at Napa. I haven't seen a bottle yet, but on Amazon and on the Napa website, it says that it's a 20W Hydraulic Oil. I think that's what I want.

If you are squirting it into airlines to lube air tools - which is roughly what a post pounder is - then the oil you want is ISO 22 viscosity. It is pretty light oil. If you cross the viscosity over to an SAE engine oil it comes out to be about a zero to 5 wt SAE motor oil.
The thing about hydraulic oils that makes them special is partly the lubrication, but also that unlike motor oils that separate from water, a hydraulic oil will emulsify with water so it can carry any water in the compressed air lines out and away.

I found this chart and it makes sense.

A rough guide to common hydraulic oil ISO grades and their applications
  • ISO 15 Hydraulic Oil – ISO VG 15 Hydraulic Fluid is used in power steering and hydraulic brake systems
  • ISO 22 Hydraulic Oil – ISO VG 22 Hydraulic Fluid is generally used in airlines for air tools etc.
  • ISO 32 Hydraulic Oil – ISO VG 32 Hydraulic Fluid is ideal for use in high-powered machine tools
  • ISO 46 Hydraulic Oil – ISO VG 46 Hydraulic Fluid is normally required for industrial plant working under high-pressure
  • ISO 68 Hydraulic Oil – ISO VG 68 Hydraulic Fluid is designed for use in systems which require a large load-carrying ability
  • ISO 100 Hydraulic Oil – ISO VG 100 Hydraulic Fluid tends to be used in industrial machinery with heavy loads
