Hey guys I'm looking at a 2000 laser z with 950hrs on it, owned my an individual for his yard, not a commercial business. In the photos it appears clean. Has a new clutch, battery, seat and roll bar and good ag tires. The guy wants $3,800. I'm of course going to try and talk him down. What do you guys think of the price and anything specific I should look at on the machine? I'm a tractor guy and new to the zero turns.

Air or water cooled engine? Which engine does it have?
An older machine, but not many hours.
I would do the following:
  1. Check the battery voltage
  2. Do a COLD start.
  3. Run it up to full throttle quickly once it warms up enough that it doesn't need the choke (ie: push the throttle from idle to full throttle quickly rather than babying it up there) to see if there is any hesitation or stumbling.
  4. Check the battery voltage (to make sure it is charging)
  5. Go full speed at full throttle in a straight line and see if it tracks straight. If the pumps or wheel motors are getting weak, you will have a hard time going straight. A little difference (1/2" to 1" at the tops of the sticks) is a normal adjustment/wear related difference, but not much more than that.
  6. Turn on the deck, does it spin right up? Any odd sounds? Does the motor sound like its lugging?
  7. Try mowing some high grass, you should be able to make the motor work and possibly stall it if you push hard enough. Back off if you start smelling a slipping belt...
  8. Check the battery voltage while someone sits on the mower with the deck on (when the deck has been on for a while) to make sure that it is making enough juice to keep up with the demands of the electric clutch
  9. Check that it feeds from both tanks
  10. Shut it down and open the tank you were feeding from to make sure it isn't pulling a vacuum
  11. Check that the tank caps still have their seals
  12. Check that the sticks are fairly firm when moving forward and back, not loose and floppy (in a front to back direction) as that is a sign of the damper underneath going bad.
  13. Check that the deck spindles spin freely and don't wobble when you spin then by hand
  14. Check that the deck isn't warped or bent

Thats all that comes to mind from my time working on them.
