I have been mowing a ladys field that is pretty thick and it is on a hill. It seems that my 2000BD overheats within 10 minutes of mowing. I didn't have any anitfreeze with me so i used good ol' water. I woul dhave to mow for 10-15 minutes and then let her cool off. Needless to say, it takes quite a while to mow a field this way.

I'm wondering if this is just because the field is thick and I'm running a 5ft brush hog or is there something mechanical wrong????

I have mowed many fields before without this problem, although this field is most likely the thickest I've mowed...

I mow in sometimes 100 deg. temps & have never had an over heat problem. Check your radiator of blockage

I have the same setup and have no heat problems in FL. I assume you checked the screen or if yours is missing like mine, the radiator fins themselves. Mowing generates a lot of chaff that plug the fins fast.

Why did you have to add water? Do you have to do it often?

Also, when the tractor is cool, can you see the water circulating with the radiator cap off?

One of those thermometers that you point and read (infra red) can help you see if the radiator is plugged by seeing if one part is much cooler than the other.

If yours has the screen, can you post a pic so I know what I need to fix one up for my BD?

Nope, no screen on mine either, You are talking about the radiator being plugged up on the inside correct? that very well could be. I will have to check. i had to add water because I am missing my overflow bottle and it steamed out.

Yep, could be a flow of coolant / circulation problem

I'd get a overflow bottle. I think I recall a thread about this on here somewhere. Bad thing is from what I remember, the BDs have a different one than the 2000s. You could fashion one from the auto parts store ones too.

You can flush the radiator with a garden hose, but if it's plugged internally, I don't know how much sucess you will have.

Also, Overheating is a good place to look.

Here's an old photo showing the radiator screen, and an overflow bottle I made with a Tupperware jug and a hose clamp. I should have used a smaller jug. I think a quart would be more than sufficient.

Scesnick, What a coincidence, I'm located in your area, just over the state line from Cumberland/Lavale, and my 2210BD just started running hot for the first time last evening while mowing thick grass at my place. My problem, however, was the radiator fins getting clogged up with very fine grass clippings. My tractor has a screen on it and it still got past that to clog up the fins. I've never seen grass so fine as this, I guess its because it's been so dry. To your problem, a good flushing and refill may be a place to start, and I would rig up a overflow bottle. Without an overflow, you will loose coolant eventually due to evaporation. Your welcome to stop by and have a look at mine if needed for a pattern. I am in Wellersburg PA, depending on where you are in Garrett County, I may not be too far away. Dave B.

Davblan,

Wow ! small world huh !! I am in just acrossed the line in garrett county, I am directly behind the I-68 weigh station ( about 5 miles as the crow flies) on the top of Savage mountain.
here is another coincidencefor ya. I looked at the radiator today and mine is ALSO plugged up with very fine grass !! I think a good shot of compressed air and I should be good..

California,
I fashioned a recovery bottle exactly like the one you made this morning, ( I stole the bottle off the wife) except I just put the hose in the lid opening and called it good. It seems to work great but i still need to blow the grass out of the radiator.
I thank you guys for all the help.
