I am a Retired Farmer
Hi i am woundering if any of you have had any experience with the Warn 424 select kit 2wheel / 4 wheel wd select. my bike has over 3000 mile on it, i still have the org. Rear Tires and i am ready for my 4th set of front tires, i only need 4 WD less than 10% of the time, I think this Kit is no longer made, but i think there are some still to be had, i think this would make my front tires last a lot longer, and it would make the bike a lot easier to steer, I would like to hear from any of you with Experience with one of these 424 Select Kits, How did you like it, did you have much trouble with it. is there any other Co.that makes a unit like this,
I bought My Rubicon New and it has been a Dandy, what i like the Most about it is the Auto Tran. it is always in the right Gear, going up Hill or Down Hill, i use it around the place, and also use it for Hunting & Fishing i built a spiceal Trailer for my John Boat with Flotation Tires so the trailer would not sink in the mud at the eadge of the pits, had to add some water as Ballast to keep the trailer from floating with out the boat on it, also made a scoping tongue so i could put the Trailer 8ft back behind me when backing down into the Pits, Thanks for Your Input into My Questions

Rat,

I have a 2001 Rubi myself. I don't have a 424 kit on it, but have ridden some that do. I can tell you the thing steers and handles like any other 2WD ATV, and it actually becomes fun to ride, as it will slide and throw you around with the best of them!

My cousin had the 424 with a locker and that machine was a mule! It would go anywhere and pull anything.

I personally like the front slip differencial and never had the notion to add a 424 myself.

Attached is a write-up on how the transmission is designed and works, take a good look at it as it's no different in design then a hydrostatic transmission on a tractor.

Thanks Craig, I have loved this Tran. from the start, i didn't know how it was made, Thanks for the Input, i dont think i would want to lock up my front end either, The Rubicon is a Real Mule,

424 is great, I got one on my foreman. Makes it almost "sporty"... well as sporty as that tank can get:D

Only issue is with the cable actuator, Actually its in the pull knob area. The slider inside is brass and can gall in the aluminum housing. There are also 2 ball bearings in there with detents that actually do the "locking" when your engaging 4wd. These BB's seize.

Basically, you have to take the knob apart annually and clean and lube it up. Not that big of deal. The benefits outweigh the problems 10x

I had the 424 on my 2000 Trx 450 and loved it. Also installed a Detroit Gear-less Locker. Made it real easy to steer when the front was dis-engaged. When engaged it was about twice as hard to steer, but traction for plowing was great. You had to do something real stupid to get it stuck. Not too hard to install for either the locker or the 424.

Lake Rat,
As I remember the cable should be routed so it is as big a curve as possible to avoid binding. Looked for a picture but can't find the one where I went through the upper body work by the rack hole. I enlarged it just a little.
Fluid Film is great for lubing the upper cable where Scooby mentioned it gets sticky.

Thanks Spud Hauler I under stand Your & Scooby's point about keeping that Cable well Lub. and i will see to it that it is taken care of, one thing i have going for me is my bike sleeps in side all the time, unless i am on a hunting trip or out fishing and a rain comes up, i will Lub. it well from the stat and then relub. it when ever it needs it. i am 72 and am looking forward to the Bike being easier to steer, These Bikes just Amazes Me where they will go and what they will do, I think of them as a GOAT, How something that weights about 500# can Climb & Crawl up slick banks with me on his Back With out hardly sliping a tire is a WONDER, Thanks again for You Info.
