new holland tn65
A person in the local area where I live is selling off his land and assets. He has a 2003-4 New Holland TN 65 tractor (serial 1293559) with 980 hours. He also has 7 implements for sale as well: box blade, harrow, bush hog, gravity spreader, 2 disk turning plow, sprayer, and root rake.

I have not looked the tractor over very closely yet, but the guy is meticulous about all of his equipment.

Most all of the reviews and data I have gathered say the tractor is dependable. Yes, I realize dependability usually is a result of service and upkeep on a farm implement.

The guy is asking $11,500 for the tractor and all of the implements. Is this a fair price? I've scoured all the used tractor websites and found prices of great ranges.

Thanks for any opinions and advice!

Does it have a front end loader? 2wd or 4wd? The answers to those two questions will affect the value a lot.

Go to tractorhouse.com and check the asking prices for that model, and it will help you.

Just off the top of my head, if the tractor is 4wd with a front end loader and all those implements, I'd say it's a really good deal that you shouldn't wait around too long on or it will be gone. That's assuming the tractor and implements are in good shape. If they are all pretty crusty, then maybe not so much.

I also have a 2003 TN65. Great machine, in 11 years the only repair is a new hydraulic pump. If maintained, should hold a high resale value.

Thanks pappy for the advice.
To answer your questions: The tractor is 2wd and does not have a loader. The implements are in good to very good shape. So, what is your assessment of the asking price?
Thanks again for your opinions.

Well, I've never owned or operated one of these, so I'm certainly no expert. But I just found this one on tractorhouse.com as an example:

http://www.tractorhouse.com/listingsdetail/detail.aspx?OHID=8701240

It has a little over 1/2 the hours of the one you're looking at and appears to be in great shape. Asking price is $12,500, so assume he will get $11,500 - $12,000.

The one you're looking at has more hours, but is certainly not high hours for a 10 year old tractor, and maybe or maybe not is in as good condition as that one.

So, figure the tractor would bring $10,000 at a dealer (and a private party sale would be a little less, typically). There's certainly quite a bit more than $1,500 of implements there. So, I think $11,500 sounds like a very fair deal for that tractor and implement package if it's all mechanically sound and is in reasonably good cosmetic condition.

Understand, though, that the implements' value can vary a LOT depending on the size, brand and condition. For example, the box blade could be a $500 Tractor Supply model or a $3,500 Gannon. Likewise, the rotary cutter could be a heavy duty Bush Hog or an el cheapo offbrand. You'll have to judge that since we don't have any information on it.

More importantly, you will have to decide if that tractor meets your needs. For most of us around here, a 2wd tractor with no FEL would not be a good fit unless it was a secondary tractor for a specific purpose. If you've never had a front end loader, you have no idea how indispensable they are for general usage.
