2004 Toolcat

So I'm looking at buying one with 4400 hours, well known shop and i personally know the guy, thats not to say he wouldn't take me if he had the chance. This will be my first anything like this and i know nothing about them. What should i look for? do they have any known issues? Pumps been done,gaskets and seals done. starts right up and doesn't smoke. Very neat and clean unit that he has owned for 2 years. Asking price $25000obo Canadian, looking online this kinda seems to be the going rate for these things, if a guy can find them. I will be using it with a bucket for snow and also with the brush. What do you guys think? Stay away or get the thing?

sorry guys 2400 hours not 4400, its a non turbo with independent suspension at all 4 corners, ill go get more info on it today

Independent suspension on all four corners? IIRC that would imply a "D" model.

2248 actual hours. Motor been done top to bottom as well. no leaks and starts like a dream. being a non turbo will i have any power issues? or can i do anything to it to bump the power up? in the box there is an aux fuel cell not sure of size (gallons) but he says it runs forever with both tanks and it doesn't really take up any room so guessing not that big capacity wise. what should i be looking for as far a problematic things? do they have any issues? all service work was done by Bobcat of Edmonton, just waiting on the work orders for it. I'm guessing it should be pretty solid but would still like some opinions or advice.

I think you first need to identify which model it is. Based upon the number of hours I would guess 'A' or 'B'. Is the lift boom solid or is it split where you can see through the middle? If it is a solid boom are the arms for the tilt mechanism white ('A') or black ('B')? Each model has different issues you need to be aware of. The dealer should be able to provide you with a list of updates available for the machine as well as a record of what has been done to it.

Pushing snow with a bucket doesn't require a lot of power. Are there other tasks you will be using the machine for? I think you will find the members here can provide feedback using the Toolcat across a wide variety of applications.

solid black lift boom, no split in it. i will be taking it for test ride on weekend if it warms up here. It does have the independent suspension front and rear as well. how do I find out the series, would it be in the serial number?

If it has a solid boom with black arms for the tilt mechanism it is a 'B' series. It will have a solid rear axle with suspension versus the independent rear suspension found only on the 'D' and 5610.

The dealer should be able to show you the repair history on the machine. As I recall some of these had drive motor problems which could get expensive to fix. Search the Toolcat forum for motor and you should be able to find them. There were also software updates related to the cooling fan. Again, your dealer should be able to provide you with a list of updates for the machine and which updates have been performed.

I have seen a few of the first models 'A' go for $14,000 USD. I paid $17,000 for my 'A' last summer. Mine also has an overhauled motor and the drive motors have been replaced. The drive motors were a problem with the early models from what I have read. Mine runs and starts great except that it has had some problems since it turned cold. You can read my thread on here if you want to know about the problem. I seem to have it resolved now but I still have my fingers crossed. I am amazed at how much snow it will push and the traction it has. It works great for pushing snow and I use it for building fence for farmers in the summer.

I was mistaken on the boom but I cant remember what it is at the moment, I do know without a doubt that it does have independent front and rear suspension. It was -30 Celsius when I was starting the thing and it started perfect like i said, I've yet to see exactly what has been done but will later this week when i pick it up, if all goes well. I seriously doubt it has a an independant suspension and 2400 hours. It is only on the D series which was 2007 until now. You may see springs/coils but that is not the independant suspension.
