I believe Detroit Diesel is a GM Company.

Chrysler is using a Mercedes diesel in their dodge Vans right now. The Dodge Sprinter Chassis uses a 2.7 litre Inline 5 rated at 154 hp at 3,800 rpm and 243 lbs of torque at 1,600 rpm. It pushes a 7,320 lb 22 camper conversion 0-60 in 18.3 sec and gets 18.3 mpg. It's on an 8,550 lb GVWR chassis. Not too bad for a vehicle 10'8" high. This is backed up by a 5 speed auto trans.

I believe this engine is also going into the Jeep Liberty. That's more torque than my 99 Cherokee FI 4.0 six.

It should be reliable and would work well in any light duty 1/2 or 3/4 ton pickup if heavy towing is not a concern.

Well, I learned something new, too. I knew that GM got rid of Allison, but didn't know that they shed Detroit Diesel. I guess I'm not but 4 years behind. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I'm really behind the times. I stand corrected. I also didn't know that GM got rid of Allison.

If you look at the Allison Websight, it says copyright 2004, Allison Transmission, General Motors Corporation.

Since Allison's 1000 series is only showing up in GM and not FORD or DODGE light trucks, I assume it's still part of GM. The problem with DODGE/CUMMINS combinations was the weak DODGE transmission. If GM no longer owned Allison, I'd expect to see the Allison in FORD and DODGE.

But Hey, I was wrong before!!!

Before Ford developed the torqshift I would have said you would have been right. In all the literature I've read the Torqshift from Ford is a stronger transmission than the Allison.

Joe, I guess either my information, or my memory, is even worse than I thought. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I can't remember where I read it, but quite some time back I was sure I had read that GM sold the Allison Transmission division to one of the European companies. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Gettin' old, I guess.

I had several Ford dealers telling me last year that they thought they were going to get Cat diesels in their trucks. Two of the dealers told me that they had seen a prototype of the "Tonka" version that actually had a Cat diesel in them. I wonder what went wrong with that deal? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

They do have CAT diesels in their trucks. You can get cummins, powerstroke or CAT in the 650 and above trucks. If your dealers were talking about the 250-550 Ford has a contract with International/Navistar to supply those engines through 2010.
