Tractor
looking at Max 28xl
I was hoping for some help in my search for a compact tractor. I have about a 3/4 mile gravel driveway that has become much too expensive to hire out the maintenance work. My idea is to purchase a 28-30 hp tractor with an FEL and a 5' land plane/grader. I was ready to pull the trigger on a John Deere 790 with FEL in fair condition for $10,500 which is the top end of my budget. Then I came across a 2006 Cub Cadet 6284 with FEL,mower deck, and backhoe for $10,000 that looks to be in excellent shape. All the extra attachments would surely be useful on my property but thought they weren't in my budget. I've read mixed reviews on the 6284, from really bad to good. Any advise would be appreciated.

I've had good luck with my 6284. There have been some necessary repairs, all of which I have done myself, but over-all I can't complain. Most recently I replaced the seals and some of the ball bearings in the front end. I would suggest that you will want to either have a good mechanic available or be willing to do some of your own maintenance and repairs since most Cub dealers really are not equipped or experienced for this. You should also be advised that shop manuals were never made available for this model, however you can use downloaded 5000 and 7000 series manuals to cover most stuff. My 6284 was also hard to start in very cold weather. I now have a block heater in it and a larger than factory battery and cold starting is no problem. I also had problems with the safety switches (common on all makes and models) and finally by-passed the darn things to have a tractor that starts reliably. This is mentioned in other threads on this and other forums.

Much of the bad stuff you will hear about the 6284 actually stems from the poor reputation of the 5000 series before it that suffered from notorious hydrostatic transmission issues. For the most part those issues were resolved in the 6284, but the bad reputation kept the resale value of them down providing for some good deals for people shopping for used tractors.

Is it a Cub backhoe? If not, does it have a subframe? I would run away from a 3-pt hitch backhoe, I've seen what they can do to a frame. (bent and cracked)

If it's a factory cub backhoe and all is in good working order, that's a great deal!

Good luck with whatever you get, and welcome to TBN!

It is a factory backhoe with the subframe.

Thanks everyone for your input. I was able to purchase this tractor this last weekend. The gentleman selling it was honest enough to warn me that the PTO was acting funny sometimes. We negotiated the installation of a new PTO assembly before I pick it up.
