I have a 2008 New Holland TL100A, 4 wheel drive tractor that is making crank case oil. The oil doesn't smell like diesel fuel is in it and it isn't really thin. It is thinner like hydraulic oil and smells a little like it, but the oil level in the tranny remains full. It increases about a quart during an eight hour day of mowing.I thought it might have a pump seal leaking but I would think the tranny level would show a decrease. If it is diesel leaking into it, and for some reason I'm not picking up on the smell, where should I look first, and has there been an issue with other tractors of this nature? Thanks, Richard

That is bad news and you better quit running the tractor until fixed as you are going to ruin the engine. What I think it is, is a blown head gasket or a cracked head that is leaking antifreeze into one of the pistons and draining down into the crankcase. Oil floats on top of antifreeze and raises the level on the dipstick. This means for every quart of oil you measure, there is a quart of antifreeze in the bottom of the crankcase. Antifreeze doesn't lubricate! If this is the problem you will soon blow the engine. Check it out immediately! Don't drive it anymore until fixed. Check to see if your radiator is low of antifreeze. The engine is probably overheating also.

Pull the drain plug and catch the "oil" and if water is in it it will come out first and sit in the bottom of the bucket.

You could be pumping oil into the crankcase from a blown hydraulic pump seal or fuel from the injector pump. Those two things would not change the color of your oil. If you have a good nose, you might be able to smell fuel or hydraulic fluid in the oil. Otherwise, keep close tabs on your hydraulic reservoir level to see if it is going down. If your engine oil is milky looking, it could be engine coolant. But if it is nearly normal in color, then suspect hydraulic fluid or fuel. Your source could be power steering pump seals bad, but normally you'd see that right away because of extra steering effort.

Hi, Thanks for replying. The oil has been drained several times and there is no antifreeze in it and it doesn't over-heat.

Hi Jim, Thanks for your imput. I have drained the oil several times and there isn't any antifreeze in it and the coolant resevoir is full and there is no over-heating prob. I was leaning toward the hydraulic pump seal but I haved drained off more than 10 quarts of excess oil since I've had this machine and the tranny oil has stayed the same.It smells like hydraulic mixed with the engine oil but there isn't anywhere else it could be getting that from. It almost has to be diesel fuel but it's funny that it doesn't smell like it and the oil isn't as thin as you would expect to be if it had a quart or 2 of diesel added to it.Do you know of a problem they have that would involve fuel leaking through the injector pump or from a line into the crankcase?

Time to quit guessing and get an oil analysis done.

I could not agree more. Bossman411, you HAVE to stop guessing. 2-1/2 gallons should show on the hydraulic dipstick. Your problem could be diesel and that could be coming from a lift pump seal as well as the injector pump. Find out first what the foreign liquid is and then you can isolate it without going on an Easter egg hunt. Time to stop guessing and save yourself a big repair bill. It could be something simple, but you need to know the what before you can figure out the where.

I finally talked to a service man at my local dealership that sounds like he knows something. He thinks there is a good chance that it is leaking diesel through the lift pump. He has changed several of them out in the last few years. I'm hoping that's it because he said if it was in the injector pump, it is going to be pricey. Thanks for your input Jim
