The owners manual I recieved with tractor was for 20r series and said 1.2 gal for 3 cyl engine later I got a manual for the 3510h tractor it calls for 1.4 gal. but if i put in almost 6 qts dipstick shows overfull by at least a qt. I'm confusted as to why I got a 20r series manual with a 3510h tractor and how many qts to use.

I can't tell you how much it has for capacity, but if it's just a qt over after running it and sitting I wouldn't worry aboutit.
You can run her for 10 minutes or so **** down and immediately pull the dipstick looking for foam or froth if the oil is foamy drain a bit out if not don't worry about it.
Quite often we will run a qt or more over because of the hills around here.
As far as the manual get after your dealer.

Engine oil fills are funny, for me anyway. Trying to top off using the dipstick and figuring how much you added for a given dipstick level and continuing to use that analogy can overfill fast at full recommended crankcase level.

One thing you need to do before you finish your top off is to fill to full and crank the engine and run it for a minute. Shut it down, give it a couple of minutes to drain back and check it again....fills up the filter for one thing. Engine mfgrs. caution about overfilling, but I have overfilled engines slightly all my life and never observed a problem like bubbles in the oil, or oil where it doesn't belong. Besides, since I am on rolling terrain, I like full crankcases to ensure adequate oil levels for the pump to pickup on slopes......and always fill on a level surface.

Oil changes are ugly in the very way you mentioned. Most of don't do it often enough to remember exactly how much it takes. My 3510 manual said the capacity is 6.1 quarts. I did 6.2 and it seems spot on,

BUT with any oil change for he first time I would stop about a quart short and wait 20-30 minutes then check the dipstick. I agree with a short turnover of the engine (30 seconds to a minute at most) but I'd start that wait time after you shut the engine down.

My manuals for things I change myself have handwritten note about filter numbers, fill amounts and In fact i actually try to find a place on the equipment to write that information down included date and running time when I did that work.
