Hello everyone
I have a Davis 185 backhoe I am bringing back to life. This model has 2 swing cylinders. Both leak, one is really rough, I would like to find replacements or fix them. While that is being explored is there any issue running just one? I think one is beyond my capabilities. I am communicating with the hydraulic forum. I know it will be quicker.
Thank you
Don

That's a lot of weight too try to swing with one cylinder. They may be single acting cylinders so one cylinder may just push it one way.
I agree with Spitter to have them rebuilt. New cylinders wouldn't be any better and possibly of less quality.

They are double acting. Someone drilled and tapped parts and welded on the end.

I am more concerned with the increased speed. I would like to find a replacement for the battered one.

That cylinder looks like some idiot wrapped a chain around it. Some people shouldn't be allowed around machines. Look on Surplus Center
The have a lot of hydraulics

Great outfit and I have considered going new. Many of the repairs I have made to the tractor, loader and backhoe have had hack jobs done. If I went new, issue will be the ends and or modifying them to fit the frame. Also these cylinders have three ports. Two at the base end that plumb into a valve that provides cushion near the end of the stroke. I am guessing the purpose is to help time the right and the left. The unknown to me is if this is in fact the reason and if there is flow dividing taking place beyond what a tee will do. I know from modifying my steering to an orbital, a tee by itself will not insure 100% synchronization and I have no idea if that is even necessary. If it is then maybe some type of flow divider.

I googled backhoe swing cushion and found this link. Its talking about a different model but your should be similar. That second port probably goes to a relief valve to absorb and slow the stop.

Again, not an expert, but...

The cushion valves are basically just a double relief valve set up that directs fluid from one side to the other. This occurs because after you let go of the lever there is still a lot of weight moving. If there was no relief, it would build to a dangerous level, so it is relieved in a slow and controlled manor that allows for a gentle slow to a stop.

I have about a week before our first rains hit and need to get some work done before. Going to run with one cylinder while I explore either two new ones, find an exact old part that I can rebuild or have a shop fix the mess in the pictures.

Thank you for the input and the link,
Don
