I am not sure but I think I have 202 engine in my JD 400 backhoe. When I bought, it one of the connecting rod bolts had become loose and was resting in the oil tray.

A while ago I read at a Swedish forum that conrod bolts is a known issue in the 202 engines. Does anyone know if there is any substance in this rumour?

Can't speak to the issue but general practice is to not re-use con rod bolts.

I don't remember 202 cid engines having conn rod bolt problems when I was employed by JD dealer from '66-'87

Thanks for your input!

The bolt was still in one piece but the theads were slightly damaged.

I do not know anything about the history of the engine. If it was rebuilt they may have missed to tighten the bolt properly or reused an old bolt. I now have to get a new connecting rod (and new bolts!). The crankshaft was also damaged.
