2120, What\'s the verdict?

Hi All

I am looking at a used 2000 (model year) New Holland 2120 with under 600 hrs and 3 hrs left on an extended warranty from NH. Looks to me that the thing is built like a tank. I have a couple of questions for those with experience:

1) What is the reputation of this model in terms of reliability, endurance etc?

2) Does anyone have any experience with the 5 yr extended warranty? How well does it cover the important stuff and how tough is it to get work done under warranty?

Thanks

Re: 2120, What\'s the verdict?

The 2120 is a good little tractor. I always thought for the largest of the compact line it would be equipped with a little stronger engine but it makes up for it with lots of gears. Ours had a 12X12 transmission. There was nothing fluffy about the 2120, it had the standard things tractors have. The biggest problem we had and still have with it is the loader lift. Its actually not the loader as we found out here on TBN but rather the problem was islolated to a seal between each half of the tractor gear case. The case would repeatedly loosen all the bolts around it and everytime we finished using it it would leak fluid because the halfs had come apart just a tiny bit. I finally cleaned, primed and put locktight on every bolt and cranked them down. They are holding but at some point I am sure we'll be splitting the case. This is a good tractor that you should be able to get at a bargain. Rat

Re: 2120, What\'s the verdict?

I have one.My father and me bought it to yard wood out with.My Dad is now deceased.I have really worked this tractor hard.Did have to have one of the FEL arms welded.I broke it,but if you saw some of the rocks and stumps I have dug out,you would see why.I work it too hard.I have had no trouble with the motor.Has plenty of power to do what I want.If it was a heavier tractor it could even do more.Poor tractor.I need to keep watch on my housing bolts too and the ones on the FEL frame.I suppose from the work I make it do.

Re: 2120, What\'s the verdict?

IMHO, the 1920 and the 2120 were the best compact tractors ford/nh offered in that power range.

I work the snot out of my 1920 and would love someday to get a 2120.

Re: 2120, What\'s the verdict?

I've had a 2120 since 1988 and worked it very hard. No problems with the loader or oil leaks, or bolts loosening for that matter. The 2120 is a very rugged tractor and has a bigger frame than the TC45. The 1920 is a good tractor but in no way equal to the 2120. My 2120 had a Ford 758 backhoe on it for years, and I did some serious work with it.

Re: 2120, What\'s the verdict?

I would have to agree the 20 series was an outstanding set of tractors. I have a 1720 and my brother-in-law (Rowski on TBN) purchased a 2120 around the same time. They are a stout tractor that you can really work. Love mine and wouldn't trade it for any of the new ones.

Re: 2120, What\'s the verdict?

Did anyone say the 1920 was equal to the 2120?.. Merly similar, as to size / features / power range.

Equal in reputation I would say... the xx20 series tractors were champs.

Re: 2120, What\'s the verdict?

I've got a year 2000 2120 also. Great tractor. I've got the rear wheels set so they are at almost max width, and this really helps with stability on hills.

I will echo the concern about bolts loosening that hold the main cases together--for me, I think the problem was caused by my use of my 3PH backhoe, which the dealer sold to me at the time of the tractor purchase. After they fixed it a couple times under warantee, they said I should really use a sub-frame for a backhoe on there. Nice time to tell me.

Overall, for it, but beware of loosening bolts, especially with heavy loader or BH use.
