Greetings: Today I took the JD 214 out of the shed, took off the plow-blade and installed the tiller attachment. All seemed ok, I did some tilling, but the pto will not disengage. The tiller keeps running even though I have moved the handle to the off position. Any and all advice gratefully accepted.
Thanks in advance.

That is a mechanical linkage, right?
.

What is the s/n of the 214?

It is a mechanical linkage, sir. The S/N of the machine is: C214E055384M.
Today, it is freed up, again. I'm not sure if it was just some dirt jammed in there, or what. I am not sure where the adjustment would be for the brake shoe.

Thanks guys.

Eugene.

On the tiller, where does the drive belt go?
Across an idler pulley that is used to engage the tiller, or does the tiller get driven off the PTO clutch that also is used to drive the mower deck?

The tiller runs off the main pto pulley. There is an intermediary pulley to route a round belt to the tiller. I can post a pic, tomorrow, if you like. It's a cute little rig. So I guess you're right about there being an idler pulley.

That helps.
There is an adjustment on the engage/disengage arm on the clutch. It may just be sticking when you disengage, thus the pulley doesnt release and keeps running.

Watch it closely and see if that arm needs to be adjusted to do it's intended task.

I used to have a 212, and recall having to keep that adjustment just right for the clutch to work properly. On mine, the clutch had a brake pad on a small adjustable strap that would contact a free running clutch sheave and bring it to a stop. That required a fine adjustment and tuning to work correctly too. I didn't have the tiller, only the mower deck. Liked it a lot, but it did take some care and attention to stay "tuned", as does the variable speed drive.

If I recall, there are springs on the left side of the pulleys. Are they there or missing. I believe that there are two of them.

I believe you are right, and here is a pic of the parts (for the later s/n 's )

Thanks guys. Glad I'm not the only one with this concern.
Mine has been acting up for years and just got me in trouble yesterday.
I can't force the PTO to come free even with a crowbar until it cools off, usually overnight.

After I cleaned the friction material up last time it worked well for a couple mowings. (no signs of overheating damage or discoloration).

Is there a permanent fix? Like replacing the piece with the lining on it?
I just don't see how an adjustment can keep it from wedging together???

Thanks,
Lloyd

The lining was covered with grease again. The seal is discontinued and no one seems to have any left. So I just cleaned nearly all the grease from the bearing and put it back together again. BTW, this deck is the nicest cutting deck I have ever used...
