Ok, I've posted this before, When mowing every so often the engine will bogg down, turn off the Pto the engine is idling fine. Put on a new clutch, went over all pulleys on the deck and all are good. One looked ok, but had a little drag, so I changed it. I disconected the safety switch for the seat and left the one side cover off of the deck. While mowing, it bogged down, I got off the mower and looked at the deck(that side cover was off and deck was still running but engine was bogged down), all pulleys were spinning and looked fine. Turned off mower, and spun the blades by hand, spun very easy and nothing in a bind. Started mower, turned on Pto, and engine bogged again. Anyone have any ideas???? I am really getting tired of this P.O.S. !!

If there was a driven PTO bearing problem bogging a 2185 my guess would be that there will be smoking belts and red hot bearings somewhere. This should be apparent as you examine the unit. Failing to find that you could try running the PTO without the belt attached for a while and see if the bog appears, then is gone when the PTO is disengaged. If so, replacement PTO clutch is suspect. After this, I would be looking at fuel delivery and bare insulation on wires. Sorry I can't be more specific, just have to be systematic when trying to diagnose the unknown. I do hope you find it, intermittent problems make a person crazy, LOL.

Someone was posting similar problems a while back and it ended up being the belt slipped off the mule drive. Just a shot in the dark.

I was watching the belts as the mower was running and engine was bogged down. All looked good.

Pat, when I get time, I am going to take the belts off and let the tractor run for awhile with the Pto on and see if it still happens. I swear all pulleys are fine.

Ok, took of belts, ran tractor with pto on for about 20 mins and it booged down. So this eliminates the deck, it did it with the old clutch and now with the new clutch! Man, this has to be something electrical!! I think I will load it up and send it off to the dealer.

j - just another shot in the dark - perhaps youir fuel tank cap vent is partially blocked/clogged.. if so, an engine running under load fuel demand might be a bit more than the fuel supply.. ?

Not sure, but this is what I think is happening. While the PTO is engaged and running fine, somehow there is a fluctuation in power to the clutch, not enough to totally disengage it but enough that the brake of the clutch starts to drag. Turn PTO off and then back on and it is fine again until another fluctuation happens. Does this make sense to anyone? Called the dealer and they told me they can't even look at it for at least 4 weeks. I am going to call a few other places today.

You could unhook the connector to the clutch and run the tractor for a while with the PTO switch on, no bog = probably not a fuel issue, but possibly still a wiring issue. Reconnect the PTO and run it till another bog develops. Shut down tractor and feel PTO switch and clutch wiring for hot spots. A good V-O-M meter will help check resistance across switch contacts and voltage readings, maybe showing where there is a voltage drop or poor contact. The two most likely places for trouble on the PTO circuit are the PTO switch itself and the clutch. Continued wishes for good luck, this is the harder stuff to find now.
