All,

I bought a used Marlin model 60 .22 semi-auto?. The type you load 15+ rounds a tude and she reloads after each shot. Often it will not fire and I will need to manually eject that shell/reload the next. The reloading and ejection works fine when normal firing. It just appears the firing pin is not hiting with enough force. If I oil it a bit it will work again..for a while. I wish I had bought a simple single bolt action. Any ideas?

Sounds like you have build up in the track the firing pin travels in. Dismantle the rifle. Clean the firing pin and the piece that holds it, especially the grove that holds the firing pin. Clean the area of the barrel where the cartridge goes in. Basically it sounds like the rifle needs a good cleaning. Dental picks are good for cleaning a weapon.

If you want to sell it, let me know what you want, general condition of the rifle, and a picture. I can send you my email address if you want to sell it.

Couple things come to mind...

First, try a few different brands of ammunition. Some brands work better then others in some guns. There are many semi-autos that are a bit finicky when it comes to ammo. If you find ammo that's reliable...stick with that brand.
Also, take the rifle down for a good cleaning and lubrication. If you don't have a manual, go to the Marlin website. You can download or order one there.
It's also possible that your rifle's firing pin is peened (too much dry firing...not good for a rimfire gun).

It could be something as simple as a dirty chamber that does not allow rounds to seat fully and the firing pin is driving them the rest of the way in. Thorough cleaning will fix that.

How do the fired shells (or duds) look? A good, solid impression? If so, the ammo may be at fault. Try some good stuff like Remington Golden .22 or CCI Mini Mags. The stuff you get at discount places sometimes isn't all that good.

If the impression is faint, then you might need a new firing pin or spring. No big deal. Any decent gunsmith can fix that in 30 min. You can probably order the parts directly from Marlin if you want to do it yourself.

I agree with cp1969... good rim impression=no misfires=my experience

Thanks all. Just back from wallmart with cleaning and lubing. The impression is "slight" at best on miss fires. Ones that do fire do have more of a dent.

So I will clean. I'LL let you know how it works out.

I did a quick clean. I removed the stock so I would have access to the workings. First I drenched it with the cleaner and slid the bolt and pulled the trgger several times (I know dry fire= hurts firing pin) Then I shook and wiped it dry. Next I gave it a generous bath in lube. The results were much better. First test was 10 shells, 8 out of 10 fired. Next set was 16 out of 17 good. So I'm on my way. At some point I will determine if the firering pin and/or spring need replacing.

Paddy,

Dry firing may or may not hurt the firing pin, it depends on the firearm. I know on my S&W third generation pistols dry firing is ok. Dry firing is a good way to practice trigger control.

The Model 60 manual says that cleaning really isn't necessary with modern ammunition. It sounds like a prior owner took that to heart. If you haven't already done it, the barrel probably needs to be cleaned too.
