2210 Battery Corrosion

My 2210 has 50 hours on it and I noticed the battery positive post had corrosion on it. Cleaned it with baking soda and put grease on it. Called the dealer and asked if this was a normal thing too happen and they said "yes"
Are they telling the truth or is the battery defective? Its still under warrenty for 2 more months.

I haven't had any battery corrosion on my 4010 yet at about 175 hours. One vehicle that gave a lot of battery corrosion problems (and it's a problem with Toyotas: the light duty post connection on my Corrolla in Singapore fell apart after a couple years) was my Toyota Tacoma. The problem was solved with use of those felt, red and black, washers that fit on the posts below the connectors. Most auto supply stores and problem Kmart and Walmart will have them. Cleaning and greasing the posts just slow it down a little and doesn't stop it, and makes the posts messy.

On my vehicles and on my tractor, I wash the top of the battery (when washing the engines) about once/month. This washes any corrosion away and keeps it at bay, but mostly it washes away dirt that can conduct electricity away and drain the battery. This washing wasn't good enough on the Tacoma until I put the washers on the posts.

My 2210 battery just PUKED this weekend. It was all corroded around the Positive terminal. Something broke internally in the battery, because it went from Starting just fine to Nothing in like 5 minutes.

I found a direct replacement at Walmart for $45. No way will I pay $160 for a Yellow Top Optima, because the battery will die of OLD AGE before it will be wore out.

Mine was 4 yrs old according to the tag on the battery.

My 4310 went through two Deere batteries (and two free trips back to the dealer) with leaking problems before the dealer installed an Interstate gel battery. Now no problems. Tractors ought to come with a gel bettery to begin with; save everyone (except Deere) a lot of trouble.

What is the number on the Interstate battery you used??

I was going to change to an Optima Yellow Top 51r but they have been discontinued from what I can find.

I want to replace my battery in my 2520 before I begin to see problems.

Mine done the same thing at about 120 hrs, I put felt pads that they sell at the auto stores and sprayed it with theminal protector.

That was two years ago, just checked them last week and they had turned to powder, replaced them again and re sprayed the terminals.

$160 is cheap.

$45 might be expensive.

After they get heated, rattled, over discharged and then spew all over the radiator - cause a leak and drain the coolant and hydro fluid, burn up an engine or tranny.

YMMV but I will take the 'overpriced' gel cell thank you very much!

I wash the tractor every 20-30 hrs, so I'll see the corrosion if it ever happens. If the John Deere one never leaked, I'm sure this one isn't likely to. The tractor is used for personal use, so when the $45 battery pukes, I can walk right back to Walmart and get myself 2 more for FREE. (compared to the price of the yellow top).

Batterys usually die from old age, so I refuse to buy an expensive one.

Just my opinion.

Ya'all are certainly welcome to yer opinions. But check back and you will see that many folks (myself included) were just as aware of the problem as you are and diligently watching out for it, only to find it hiding undiscovered. There are cheaper batteries, but it is unlikely they are made for the rough service most tractors see.

Hopefully a good solution will come around...
