Not sure where it's leaking. It started with subzero weather last week and I plugged her in thinking it might be going to maybe snow. It didn't snow and I forgot to unplug the block heater. Now I have puddles. There is a 8 inch coolant puddle under the engine. I see bright green around the perimeter of the oil pan just below the block heater. At first I thought it was coming from the recovery tank but not sure where it's coming from. Can the block heater start to leak? And how do I fix ??? I don't know how to replace a block heater.

Has anyone ever had a coolant recovery tank cap that leaked??

Thank you!

Yes the block heater may have blown the O ring. Also the recover jug has an overflow hose that runs near the fuel filter

Can't answer your question regarding where the leak is. In future though, you really only need to plug the heater in about an hour before you want to start the engine. Otherwise, it'll sit there and lose the heat you put in via loss to the air, mainly through the radiator.

Even @ -20 F, one hour is enough.

We always left them plugged in for days when I was a kid and never had a problem. We had a lot of feed to grind. I bet its just a hose leaking.

As far as how long to leave it plugged in, I've always left it plugged in overnight if I thought I might have to plow myself out in the morning.
At -20 below zero in a unheated, uninsulated garage the motor oil needs to be warmed up a bit or I do not have oil pressure when I start it. When it is that cold an hour just isn't quite enough. The week in which I left it plugged in we had such cold and blizzard wind that I was also concerned about the fuel gelling in the tank. The block heater actually gets things warm enough that the fuel is warmed as well. Why suddenly I had a puddle I don't know, maybe because I topped off the overflow tank last fall? I will investigate closely today now I have time and it is 30 degrees. OH! 30 degrees ABOVE zero! :)
