Pulled the trigger today - 2210 to be delivered this week. Yahooooooo!
Anyway, while going over the tractor one last time, I had a question about glow plugs. On my previous diesels, you always had a glow plug cycle when you turned the key on before starting. The 2210 doesn't. I read the on-line manual which mentions nothing about glow plugs. It just recommends a block heater (which of course I ordered). I went out back and talked with one of the mechanics. He took off a side panel and started hunting. He found the glow plugs on the engine but wasn't sure how they operated. We turned the key on for a bit, and listened for a solenoid of some sort to kick on or off, but didn't hear anything.
Does anyone know if in fact it has glow plugs and if so how they operate?

They only glow while the key is turned to the 'crank' position. This is why she smokes so much when started. To 'pre' glow the plugs:
1> Place her in gear (H or L)
2> turn the key to the crank position
3> You will hear the relay click on, then off a few seconds later
4> Let go of the key
5> Quickly place her in Nutural
6> Crank her again turning her over

This will lessen the smoke, but certainly not eliminate it.

Good luck w/ your new rig! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks Jbird - that explains it.
It seems strange to me that the plugs work that way. I thought that the pre-heat was the only way that glow plugs worked. I wonder why they set it up this way?
Thanks for the pre-heat tip for the 2210.

I'm sure they think it's for our 'own good'. If you are anything like the rest of us, you will be spending hours with it the first day neglecting every other person/thing in the house! Have fun.

P.S. The PTO switch works the same as the gear selector. I added that to the first text for new readers.

Heck, when I find out my delivery day I'm taking at least 2 days off work just for this!

I cycle my 2210's glow plugs 2 or 3 times before I actually try to start it. I just set the PTO switch to on, turn to start, wait for glow plug cycle, turn key to on, then to start again, wait for cycle, then turn PTO off, and she starts right up. A lot faster startup and less smoke this way. I think the glow plug cycle should be temperature-sensitive like my Duramax but it doesn't work that way.
