I know all is well, however I just want someone than knows more than me, and that is not a real hard qualification to fill, to tell me that when I unsrew the yellow cap and look down and see a big empty space and gears exposed that all is okay. I can see the bottom part of the gears are in fluid and the dip stick is just over the XXXI. Certain this is the right dip stick, just seeing that much room in there just freaks me out. Also my fluid is the sorta clear kind, my eyes are getting old, when I do the fluid change is there a red fluid that I can use? I believe the spec is JD 303 but would have to check my manual to be sure.

Gear boxes are usually filled half full. Over filling is hard on the seals.

Over filling a gear box can cause other problems also. In high speed gear applications it will cause a higher operating temperature. To much oil will also cause increased aeration of the oil. In off camber situations the gear oil may leak out of the breather. Many are the same reason you don't fill a engine to the top.

If I remember correctly. I think it was Ernie that said he uses ATF fluid in his tractors

That's the way I remember it too. I think Ernie said it gives better cold weather performance.

I noticed something strange this weekend. The overnight low was just below freezing and it was low 40's when I started the tractor. When I went to run the backhoe, it was jumpy, shuddery, for the first few minutes. I have the same JD303 fluid in its reservoir that I use in the tractor. Should I be using something better? ATF, or one of the later tractor fluids?

What you describe is exactly what I see in the transmission of my 2220. Based on that and the assumption that there's not that much difference in this area between the 2210 and the 2220, I'd say you're fine.

Thanks guys. Maybe Ernie will jump in and tell us if he uses ford or GM fluid.

If there is any owners of a 2210 online, would you measure the length of your hydraulic dip stick? There could be a chance that some has replaced the stick with a incorrect one. That would lead to a incorrect measurement.

My 2210 hydraulic dip stick measures from the top of the rubber handle to the tip of the stick is 9 and 5/8 inches long. Hope this helps.
