I have a 2210 tractor that sits in a shed with no heat. I am concerned about start up in cold weather. I run Rotella 15w40 . I have been considering synthetic 5w40 Rotella. Have any of you people used this oil? Is it to light? I'm pretty sure it is a diesel oil. I do not have a block heater.

It will be fine. I run 5w40 syn in my X595 which has the same engine.

If you live near a WalMart they carry Mobil 1 5W-40 in large jugs - it's about $23 for these. It's a diesel rated synthetic - I used it in my VW Jetta turbo diesel.

Good luck!

Where do you live and how cold does it get? I've had my 2210 going on it's 4th winter now. I keep it in an unheated, uninsulated three car detached garage which so far stays around 20 degees inside even when it hovers round zilch outside. I run 15/40 oil as recommended and it's fine. I have a block heater but I don't always plug it it. (something about inaccurate weather forecasting?) The 2210 starts down to minus ten. Run the glow plugs longer when it gets colder. Right now I run glow plugs 5 seconds and she starts instantly at 20 degrees or a little colder. and BTW I burn BIODIESEL!

I use 5w30 Mobil 1 in my 4010. Has 280 hours on it now. Uses 0.46 gallon/hr of fuel. Bet your 2210 lube charts says the same thing as for the 4010: 5w30 for all temperature ranges except for possibly the very hottest parts of the country.

I've used 5w40 Mobil 1 in my 1983 Benz. It specs 10w40. 5w40 or 0w40 are better, if synthetic. No matter what the xxw 1st number is, it'll ALWAYS be heavier than the last number at startup conditions. So, get as small a 1st number rating as you can to aid in getting lubrication at startup. That's when most of the wear occurs, particularly to the upper valve gear train.

I have a new 2305, the follow-on to the 2210. The owner's manual specifies only 5W-30 or 10W-30 HDEO motor oils specifiying API CH-4 or CI-4 or ACEA E3, E4 or E5. "Multi-viscosity diesel engine oils are preferred." This pretty much excludes a large number of passenger car synthetic oils carrying the old API CF rating.

So I steeled myself and entered W-M, cut my way through the herds of buffalo and pachyderms, and found some Shell Rotella T 10W-30. This I will use at the 50 hour service.

I switched over my new 2305 this past summer to Amsoil Series 3000 5W-30 Heavy-Duty Diesel Oil (HDD) and the Synthetic Tractor Hydraulic Oil too.
Is it overkill on the syn hydro? Probably, but it's my machine and my money.

I've got a 2305 and I've been concerned about the oil in the machine since the 50 hour service. The dealer gave me 15w-40 and I just figured they were giving me the correct oil but the manual recommends 5w-30 or 10w-40. I run Mobil 1 5w-40 in my cars so I have it in the garage. Can I switch to synthetic at only 63 hours? I know most people recommend holding off on synthetic until the engine is broken in so I don't know if it's too early.

Correction, I'm running 5w-30 in my cars and it's not an oil made for diesels but my question still remains, is it too early to switch to a synthetic like Mobil 1 5w-40?

Talk to the shop foreman at your dealer. You should be able to use the John Deere Synthetic Plus 50 0w40 oil. I use it in my HPX Diesel Gator and it really helps on cold starts.

Well the dealer is closed today and I didn't want to use the 15w-40 any longer so I went out and bought some Rotella T 5w-40 synthetic today and put that in. The engine sounded better than it did with the 15w in it. It made a ticking noise when warming up after I put the 15w in. Maybe next change I'll go with the Deere synthetic.
