Went to neighbors to move a little dirt. Wound out over turning wheels and busting the steering box. Drove home (1/4-1/3 mile) using the brakes and a few manual adjustments to keep straight. Got home to find oil pouring from bell housing!

Ok...oil is going to be from steering gear box. Phew.

Off to Hoye to order parts!

what you did was not the cause of this, you can't break a steering box by overturning the wheels.. it must have had a crack forming already, and you opened it up. it probably had a defect, or you hit something previously..

Todd doubtful overextending the range of the steering box would do this (although like some much something's gotta give at times) These tractors are pretty old and I'm guessing the box is cast and may have had weakness in it from the beginning that time and vibration opened. I believe overextending damage is usually more related to the gears. and that certainly wouldn't do this. If it were me I'd start removing the things you need to get it off and examine it carefully. If it truly is a crack in the box itself and the internals are fine I'm thinking a good machine shop could repair for you.

If the box itself is unrepairable - I went looking for repair parts for the steering box on a smaller Yanmar, YM186D. I discovered the box and internals, but not the length of the shaft up to the steering wheel, were generic Japanese car components. That box and internals also appeared on Datsun 240Z. So an import salvage yard might be a last-chance source for components. Also your box might be the same one as on the similar YM2000.

That said, after I made cheapskate minor repairs then soon had to pull the box again, I went and bought a rebuilt steering box from Hoye. I should have done that first.

Im going to try and get the box pulled tonight and will post some pics.

To clarify- By overturning the wheels what i did was force the wheel to turn by the motion of the tractor against already turned tires. My stops are pretty worn (i should have fixed) so it allowed them to travel beyond what they should.

I did "recently" replace the steering box/shaft with a hoye bolt on assembly. This time i am ordering the rebuild kit and will reuse the stock gear box and other internal shaft.

I thought about reusing the ball gear and shaft, but right now time is more precious than $ to me...so i want all options available to get this working again.

I was wondering about this. My Kubota B7000 had a similar steering setup. Did you have the stops on the front axle set correctly? The hubs should it the stops on the axle before the steering box bottom out.

Unless that tractors doesn't have stops in front axle.

No, unfortunately I didn't have the stops adjusted correctly. The adjustment bolts were rusted in there, so i took the easy, and expensive, route and didn't replace them.

Some heat, penetrating fluid, and effort I have since busted them free and will buy some new ones.
