JD 2210
After an hour of mowing grass with my 2210 (54" mmm) in 75 degree weather, the trans housing was very hot, too hot to touch. The trans cooling fan checked-out, spinning just fine with all blades accounted for. Also no clippings anywhere to impede air flow. The trans is filled with JD low-vis fluid.

Is it normal for the trans housing to be too hot to touch, or is a hot housing indicating a potential problem? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

not sure i know as matter of fact tho u can't judge temps with ur hand.. anything over about 100-120 u can't tell anything it could be 120 to 200.. anything lower than i'd say 160-170 degrees would be ok.. not sure i'd be same as transmission temps on automatic i'd say.. I use a infared temp gun i picked up 170 bucks to check temps anymore goes up to 2K degrees great for diesels check for misfire coolant temps etc..

My 4300 trans would get hot to the touch and so does our 970. Sometime the 990 will get hot too if I use it long enough on the hot days. I would say it is normal.

I just got a sale ad for Sears. they have an IR temp gun on sale for $40

mine reads up to 2200 degrees most cheaper ones go to 500 which is ok for normal use. We run blown alky racing engine and do fair amount of diesel repair at home so the extra temp range is needed sometimes. $40 bucks tho is good investment incase u run into overheating or dead cylinders or anything heat related over 100 degrees u can see the temprature change over the radiator core or trans. temp fluid temps etc. neat tool

They are a neat tool, we have one at work. Not a high range like yours, but still very useful. You'd be surprised how far away you can be and still get a reading.
I figured at $40, you almost can't go wrong.

My 2210 has been doing that since new. Several times after mowing and a few minutes of cool-down I've started to wash it off and find steam rising off the differential/trans area. Seems to be related to use of either PTO, doesn't happen when doing loader or 3-point work.

The sad thing is that John Deere didn't see fit to make the 2210 Hydrostat water cooled like the one in my old 445. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif It had hydraulic lines running to the radiator tanks to cool the hydrostat. The hydrostatic fluid was kept at about the same temperature as the engine coolant. I missed that one detail prior to my purchase of the 2210. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif I might have gone for a 4110 or 4115 instead. My concern has been alleviated once I realized the 2210 hydro held several gallons of oil. That capacity can make up for the lack of water cooling. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

They tell me to be sure and run it in low range as much as possable to help circulate the fluid better. If you run it in high range it will tend to run hotter. This is just what I have been told.

We used to keep a heat temp tester in the glove box of the firetruck for finding hot spots in walls of homes. Real versitile tool..

I do all my mowing in high range, that might be part of my problem. Next time I will try running full out in low range and see if there is a difference. However, running full-out in low range is a lot less comfortable on the right foot/ankle versus a slower speed setting in high range.
