I have a 2210 with 15 hrs. on it, I amnot sure at what RPM it is at, but I am hearing a rattle/tick noise from the eng when the tach is at 540 pto speed.
Has anyone else heard this noise?

When my 2210 was new, I'd get an engine rattle at high RPM when the engine was cold. Went away when warm. I think I remember someone checking with their dealer on this, and found out that it is the governor that causes this.
Mine would make the rattle when cold with no PTO engaged - when running under a load it wouldn't do it.

Mine also did this. I can't remember it doing it lately. I now have 38 hours.

Mine did this when new, whenever the engine was cold at mid to high RPM's. Dealer picked it up, went all over the engine, and decided it was the a little diesel rattle caused by the governor maintaining high RPM with no load. Mine has gotten a little quieter (now nearing 30 hours) but it still does it when cold. Dealer said it was not a problem.

I understand it to be a typical cold engine combustion condition that almost all diesels have. That is, most diesels have a little "clatter" at start up that is caused by the inconsistent firing from a low-temp combustion chamber. Remember, diesels warm up and cool down differently than spark fired gas engines.

I'm no expert and am simply regurgitating the explanation I received at my dealership. I also recall hearing diesel clatter at low RPMs in most every diesel I've ever heard, even though my 2210 is the first one I have owned. My 2210's Yanmar does it on any start-up and disappears after a minute of so. It was more pronounced, and lasted a little longer, early last spring when starting it up with air temp still in the teens and twenties.

I just re-read your post and wanted to mention that on the 2200, 540 PTO RPM is reached at 2900 engine RPM. I have always waited until the engine is good and warm before running it up to the rated RPM. I'm sure it would rattle at the high revs' if it were still cold.

During break-in I noticed an occasional and isolated "tick" at the rated RPM, but that was a little misfire during the break-in period. There was not rhythm to the tick, and it was far from a rattle. It's gone now. I have 65 hours on my 2200 as of the first of this month.
