Both of my axle seals are leaking and need replaced.

I usually do all my own work but was wondering if anyone else has changed theirs and if you had any pointers?

Thanks

Ray

I think if you do a search of the archives, you will find an article. That was a common problem,I traded mine before they leaked. Tight turning can wear them quicker ,I used to wash my seal area out constantly, any grit, leaves, etc. can scratch and damage the seal. plowking

I did. Didn't find where anyone changed them themselves.

Interesting, Ray. I'm paying attention- my seals are OK so far, but I figure it's only a matter of time before I'll be doing the same thing.

In the service manual, they call it the "final case assembly" which is made of an inner and an outer section (14 & 15)- the outer section has the wheel housing on it. That's also where the seal is located.

The manual shows all sorts of stuff, but NOTHING about how to separate the inner & outer final case- they just show them separated, and another shot of the seal being pulled.

Looks like the final case assembly comes off with only the 4 bolts you can see, so that looks easy enough. Perhaps there's a snap-ring inside the wheel housing that has to come off to allow separation... have you found anything?

Please keep us posted as to how you make out!

Found it, Ray- apparently the pictures were in the wrong order.

After the wheel gear assembly is removed from the final case, there are "snap ringS" that can be accessed at the bottom from the inside of the wheel housing: "Remove the snap rings to disassemble the final case." (This is in the picture FOLLOWING the seal removal photo, on the next page....)

It would be great if you would snap some pics for us too. :) Our 1523 has only 170 hours on it, and no leaks yet, but I assume the front axles are similar enough to enlighten us when/if we have to do it.
