Just found this site and really like the info and advice from the different post. I'm looking @ a new 231S massey and would appreciate any info good or bad from anyone with knowledge of this model. Dealer's bottom line is $12,600.
Thanks, Don

Don,
If you get a chance scoot over to tractorsmart.com and check out the 231S,for this may give you a better idea on specs..pricing..financing.

That's Massey's leader model in the "200 series"... not much margin for a dealer for work with... lowest about $11,600...

It has a bullet-proof, and fuel sipping Perkins 3-cyl. diesel, about 42 PTO hp and the basic tractor design stems from the TO-20/MF35 era from the early/late 1950's...

The tractor itself should be trouble free for the next 50 years or so, but it still has weak hydraulics (~4.4 gpm) and a 8/2 sliding gear trans.{not syncro/no shuttle} {not a good candidate for loader work unless external PTO pump is added}...

For a few thousand $$$ more, I'd consider a more modern New Holland 3930 and John Deere 5105 utility tractor with excellent hydraulic horespower, and shuttle trans for loader work, and up-to-date ergonomics...

My pick of the 200 series is the 243 and the 263's. Check them out. There is a lot of difference between the 2x3's and 2x1's. The 231s is a good reliable everday work tractor, no frills.

More 231S Info.

Thanks for the replies. Can't seem to find the standard gpm flow for the hydraulics. Heard it was 4.4 and was weak. Is this good enough for a 6 ft. bushhog ,5 ft. heavyduty box blade,or a 20 blade disc? Also does the 231s have wet or dry brakes? Thanks again for the info. Don

Yes, it will work all the above {with the discs-I would add more bulk weight though}, and the brakes are dry, with a live PTO {2 stage clutches...hasn't changed in about 44 years}...

Everything changes when you move up to the 243 Model... wet disc brakes, optional sync/shuttle shift & optional independent PTO, 13.9 gpm hydraulics, increased 47 PTO hp... but about another $5500. more $$$...{If you have your heart set on Massey Ferguson...for the most dollar value, this is the unit to buy...with those options... you'll never regret it}

Good luck...
