My dad's 234 just had the water pump fail. Pump seized up and burned off the belt. Just ordered both off of Ebay. Water pump looked to be original. I think the tractor was built in 1984.

Everything is back together and running fine. Tractor has a stupid setup for replacing the belt.

Just curious - The cogged belt on my IH 234 broke and it seems to be quite a job to replace it. Before I order a repair manual, can you shed some light on "stupid setup for replacing belt"
It doesn't appear that I can slip belt over bottom pulley and likely have to remove electric PTO, Radiator etc.

Look forward to your comments.

I really had to think about it...it has been a while...lol

Anyways, From what I remember, I had to remove the bolts that connect the front mounted elec pto shaft to the motor in order to get the belt around the pto shaft and water pump. Once the bolts are removed (3 or 4 bolts on the end of the motor pulley...can't remember), the bolts on the pto housing could be removed and moved forward.

I will look for a pic that explains in a minute.

BTW, I have an illustrated parts manual for the engine if you are interested.

Also, my Dad's tractor has a Woods belly mower if that helps. If yours doesn't have this setup, you likely would not have the front mount elec pto for the belly setup.

Couldn't find a pic for you. When I replaced the water pump, I had everything (radiator, belt, front pto, pulley, hoses, etc) off. I think you might be able to get by with just removing the front pto and shaft from the pulley on the motor and then snake the new belt around the fan, water pump and pulley. Not sure if the fan shroud allows enough room. I will look tonight if I remember.

Thanks Warment: Fast response. Sadly you are telling me what I didn't want to hear. A lot of parts have to come off to get belt around bottom pulley.I just had shop replace PTO clutch with an after market OX clutch rather than original so may have to go back to shop BUT they are so busy I didnt want to wait as long as they take ( last time 6 weeks for simple job - priority sequence I suppose)
Do you recall if you had to pull the rad ?

A pic if you can find it would be helpful. Mine has 61MB belly mower

I am weighing in my mind if I can do it myself ??? I am not a real mechanic but a jack of all trades with NO special skills.

Thanks again

You answered so quickly - Rad likely has to come off BUT if you think it can stay by snaking belt around shroud would respect your opinion.

Let me look again tonight and give you my honest opinion. At the minimum, the pto shaft has to be disconnected from the crank pulley and slid forward to get the belt where it needs to go there. Not that big of a deal for that. You do have to loosen the deck drive belt as well.
