Hello! I'm setting up my 3-point for the first time since owning my 240D. It came with a slew of 3-pt parts and I've mostly got it figured out, but, there's always a hiccup. So, I have 2 different length lift arms. One is 34" end to end and the shorter one is about 26" end to end. It barely clears the rear tire. I've looked through the parts manual and operators manual and can't confirm anything other than the fact that the lift arms appear to be of equal length. Can someone advise as to how long the lift arms should be?

Also, it didn't come with any pins to secure the lift arms to the tractor and as far as I can tell, they attach to a tab with hole about halfway down & below each rear axle. Can someone also confirm this along with what type of pin or bolt to use?

Lastly, operating the 3-point. It raises and lowers just fine. Not having operated one before, I want to make sure I understand how to, correctly. Stop valve open under the seat, lift lever in the full upright position, it raises. The engine strains as it tops out, so I back off the lever ever so slightly and the 3-pt starts to fall again. Is that proper function? To keep it from falling, am I supposed to raise it fully, then close the stop valve to prevent fall?

Thanks in advance guys!

Just get what ever arms match. Longer will give better reach but reduced capacity, but I'd say if one barely clears tire you want the longer one.

That valve upright is all the way open with a heavy implement on it like a bush hog or harrow it will drop like a sack of rocks. It's just like a simple ball valve. Up is all the way open 90degrees from that to either side is basically all the way closed but I think it still slowly leaks down.

It strains at the top cause your bottoming that piston out in the cylinder. I have had this whole system apart so I have a pretty good understanding about it. The linkages are still some sort of crazy wizardry but I get what it is doing.

The 3-point lower arms go on pins sticking out from each axle housing. Note the pins are Metric thread, similar pins from Tractor Supply are likely SAE so you need the real thing, from Hoye etc.

Here's a longwinded thread I posted recently, describing replacing a pin I tore out. It had been sloppy loose when I bought the YM240 in 2003 so I cemented it in with permanent Locktite and JB Weld. Fifteen years later it tore out, taking with it a chunk of the axle housing. I replaced the entire housing. Skip over the text, see the photos.

California, Yes! You got that axle housing through my contact back a few months ago. I had the broken bull gear on the same side. So, I don't have those pins and I think it's because of the aftermarket backhoe mountings that I have. I mean, the housing is no doubt the same, but I believe that the holes that the pins are supposed to be threaded into are covered up by a steel plate. I will definitely look into it this evening. There are however, tabs on both sides, about half way down the axle tube, on the bottom, that i'm not seeing in your pictures. I'm wondering if that's aftermarket or some kind of jury rig to have the backhoe and 3-point. I will try to get some pictures this evening. I was hoping to have all this together yesterday so I can use it this week. Now I have to track down some lower arms that match... grrrr.

Thank you Winston! That was so long ago that it was before the preview thumbnails, so I couldn't find it. But you inspired me to keep looking through the index of pix I've posted.

Here's a 2007 thread similar to this thread today, where I used that diagram:

https://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/yanmar/99395-unknown-part.html

Since some old photos are no longer visible, here they are again:

(My YM240) The paint on the double nuts is undisturbed, so the position control rod is apparently still adjusted the same as it left the factory.

A diagram of the Slow Return Valve, also showing the position control rod.

And the diagram Winston referenced, describing how to [not] adjust it.

I've had this come up a couple times. When the arms reach the height you want them to be at the highest point is were you set the adjustment to relieve pressure off the 3pt control valve.
