Hello, I just bought a Satoh Bull. I was changing all the fluids and I noticed it uses 250 W SAE gear oil in the rear dif and I can't find where to buy it. Anyone know who sell's it?

Usually the only place you will find 250 weight or heavier gear oil is in industrial applications. It's out there, just not easily found. Most automotive parts stores only carry up to 140 weight. Most any lubricants supplier should be able to order it for you if they don't carry it. If worst comes to worst I'm a lubes consultant for TRC lubricants and we carry 250W gear oils. The only problem for a end consumer is that the smallest quantity we sell is a 45 pound (6 gallon) pail.

Aaaahhhh, yes now Dieselpower. It all makes sense. I was wondering where you got your knowledge from. Is N.E. PA in your company's territory? If so, you may have a new customer.

I'm glad to know they still make it, I live in a small town and went to every Auto parts and Tractor dealer around and they had never heard of 250w. I tried to get the local NAPA, Advance Auto parts and the Kubota dealer to order it but they do not have a supplier. I only need about 3 qts so I'll try to find a smaller container. Thanks for your help and Happy New Year.

Forgive my ignorance, but wouldn't 250wt practically be 'grease like'.... well, warmed grease.

If I remember right, an old manual for my Jacobsen Chief 100G lawn tractor (1962 era) recommended something like 250wt (and I never heard of it till I read the spec- I'm a young pup). At the time, I couldn't find any either, but since people said it was thick grease, I ended up putting Power Punch oil into the trans/diff. of the lawn tractor. I figured that it was thick and sticky and have heard great stuff about it.

OH.... is this what you need:
DuneBuggy.com - Gear Oil with Moly 250WT (Gallon)

Says 250wt gear oil in a gallon.... dang.... listed at nearly $53.00 (non member) Don't know how much shipping would be. I just Googled 250wt gear oil and that site popped up- don't have any experience w/ that seller.

Here is another:
TS-319 Moly Gear Lube SAE 250 (ISO 1000)

Hope those links help.....

Red line Shockproof heavy is rated as a 250w oil.

Taken from Redlines' WEB site:

"The [shockproof] Heavy can be rated as a 75W250 Gear Oil, but has the lower internal
fluid friction of an SAE 75W90."

~ $10/qt

Not really. Gear oil has a different viscosity rating system than grease does. A thin grease like NGLI #0000 might have about the same viscosity at a specific temperature but in colder temps would thicken much quicker than the gear oil. Remember grease is in the solids category of lubricants while gear oil is a liquid. Even very thin grease in the NGLI #00 to 000000 range (a semi-fluid grease) is still a grease with a large portion of it's makeup being the thickener base along with a completely different additive package. A good example would be a NGLI# 0000 used as a gear lubricant. It could cause rather severe problems with the lubricant foaming or being wiped up with air. This would not be as much of a problem in the 250wt gear oil as it will have a anti-foam additive package that will help to reduce the surface tension of any entrapped air thereby popping the bubbles. Different lubes for different applications.

I second the advice on the Redline Shockproof Heavy - it is good stuff!
