Back in my younger days I had a number of small block Chevy V8's, always with solid lifters (In those days, kids thought hydraulic lifters were for wimps. Adjusting your valves frequently was a sign of your supposed superior mechanical astuteness :rolleyes: ). When adjusting the valves we never paid attention to the marks. We'd just manually turn the engine a ways past the intake fully closing on a particular cylinder and adjust both valves. There is a lot of range in the 4 cycles where the cam isn't pushing against the lifters, and it doesn't make much difference where you are at on the majority of the compression or firing strokes.
