2538 no low range

Hey guys, I was looking at buying a 2538 cabbed tractor at a great price but when I test drove it, it had no low range, worked fine in high/med, but then when shifted to low there wasn't any resistance or click feeling and the tractor just acted as if it was in neutral, just trying to determine if this is a major issue or something simple, any thought would be great, thanks

No telling. It could be in the shift linkage or something busted inside. I could live without high range but not without low range. It's were all the work gets done so maybe it's busted.

I have a 2538 and often struggle to get it into gear when shifting gears. i bought it new and it seems to be getting better as i break it in. The only downside i have with mine.

I had an open station 2538 and sold it, that one was hard to change ranges until I pushed forward/reverse pedal relieve pressure, but this cabbed one shift okay until you move lever into low range and it just goes freely, not resistance and then like it's in neutral l, wont move if any thing it just rolls/coasts

It is most likely a linkage problem. I have the opposite. L and M are readily shifted. H is ALLLL the way back, with gusto.

As others have said, when new, shifting was a bear. After about 50 hours or so, it is very easily accomplished, but there are times when I need to unload the transmission by hitting one of the pedals. I live on very sloped land, so there is always a bit of a load on the HST when I am stopped.

There is neutral between low and mid. You were probably stuck in it. It's happened to me quite a bit in mine.

What did you do to get it out, but I'm pretty sure mine is different it goes forward but there is just no low range gear there, I'm going to pull tire off monday and check out the linkage for the hst gear selector

Usually resolve it by hitting the pedals, changing throttle or trying to rock the tractor a little. Sometimes it takes all three! If you think you got passed the neutral and you're fully seated in low then we've had a different problem.

Just as I had read and people mentioned, the platform metal where range selector goes through had to be cut back about a 1/4",, but i figured let the dealership do it and now all is good, I have low range again
