Hello All:

I have a GT2550 I bought mid-summer '06. It has just over 60 hours on it at this point.

When mowing it will occasionally cough then choke, then stall out with a bang and a puff of black smoke. I can restart it ok, but it may do this again two or three times. It's getting annoying to say the least.

I have maintained the tractor following all steps laid out in the owners manual, including replacing the fuel filter, but the problem persists. It's almost like it sounds when I get out of the seat with the mower running, though I have not.

Any ideas? Need more info, let me know.

Thanks in advance!

Well, I can think of two possibilities:

1. There is a clog somewhere, and it starves for fuel, runs lean, pops and dies.

2. The float is sticking and flooding the engine. I doubt this one though.

3. The float is sticking, starving it for fuel.

Does it have a clear fuel filter? Does it have fuel when this happens?

Check your air filter. Mine would choke and then smoke black. Although I could see light through the filter, I could not blow through it. A new filter fixed it.

I changed out the pre-cleaner, but maybe I should do so with the main filter. My lawn is pretty sandy in spots and raises mucho dust. I'll give it a shot and update when I know the results.

Thanks!

Oh, and don't forget the crowd favorite.

Make sure the vent on your gas cap isn't plugged up. You can test this by test running with the cap loose.

Maybe there is something wrong with this circuit.

At any rate, is it not still under warranty? If so, let the dealer fix it.

Hi All:

On Saturday, I changed the oil/filter, installed a clean pre-air filter, installed a new fuel filter and cleaned and gapped the plugs. I also did a full clean up of the tractor and full lube as well.

So, I mowed the whole lawn without the tractor stalling, but it did act twice like it starved for fuel. Didn't stall but did sputter. Wondering if there is something in the tank that might be blocking fuel flow.

How hard is it to get that tank off?

Thanks!

I think it would be easier to remove the fuel hoses from the tank and drain/flush out any crap from there. I'd try that first.

On my 1864, there is a tap on each side of the tank. The right one routes around the tank and connects with a T to the one on the left.

On mine, jacking it up and removing the rear tires made it an easy job.

I wouldn't want to have to remove the tank. It's well embedded into the frame/body work :)

This may be an option except that the dealer is 70 miles away, and I have no way to get it to them. Would they come to get it, probably, but I am sure that there may be a charge there as well.

How long is the CC warranty anyhow?
