I was wondering how you were going to get a 3100 with a deck for the money you mentioned. The difference between a 2554 and a 3100 with the 54" deck was over $2K when I bought my 2554. It wasn't worth the $$ difference to me either. If you can get a current 2554 for $3800 it's a good price. None of the dealers within 50 miles of me would move from retail.

I spend lots of money in that dealership, he normally sells the 2554 for $3999. He told me Saturday I could get the 2554 for $3800 and a Cub trimmer (promotional thing).

I do like the 2554 appearance better than the 3100, it looks like my SLT1554 (which I like) and the dashboard and all controls on the dash are exactly the same between the two.

I paid retail for my 2554 and to me it was worth every penny compared to what else is available for that $. I think if you get one you won't be sorry. ;)

I was in the same boat two months ago, when my local dealer sold his last 2554 I happend on a great deal in the classified ads here on this site. I got 2005 3200 GT with 60" deck and a cub 17 cu.ft. pull behind cart with 5 hours on it (used once) for $4500!! Might want to check around for a slightly used one.

Well, in casae anyone cares....
I just bought a 3100 with 54" deck.
I couldn't get over the PTO belt configuration on the 2554. I had an oooolllldddd John Deere that came with my camp when I bought it, and that JD had a very similar PTO configuration which I had tons of trouble with. I know the 2554 has a track record with the PTO setup and it certainly can't compare to the old JD, but I just had my doubts about the setup.
So, I will be much, much poorer now but I have a quality garden tractor for camp now. I just wish my wife doesn't blow a gasket when she gets home tonight!!!
My SLT1554 (which has been phenominal for me at the camp for mowing) will now become my home mower and the dealer is taking my Home Depot John Deere special in trade.
Now I need to stop reading forums because I will find something else I "NEED" to buy.....God help me.

Congrats on your purchase. I am sure it will give you many years of service.
I have a 2518 with the pto belt configuration and have never had any problems other than the fact I didn't put the belt on right once and shredded it. A $32 mistake. I get it right everytime now!
