I'am not new to operating a tractor, but I am new to operating new tractors.
My experience with tractors is from 20(+) years on older Harvesters, Ford, and Oliver manual everything tractors. My question or situation is; on my 2555 shuttle the only device I have to activate the PTO is a button on the dash to engage or disengage. The problem is the instruction manual is kinda vague on just how to engage the PTO smoothly. I have tried several different ways and they all result in the PTO hitting hard on any implement I have connected. I was taught that you always push in the clutch and give the gears a chance to spin down, then engage the PTO and slowly let the clutch out. That doesn't seem to work on this model, no matter what I do it hits hard and either shears a pin or lugs the engine down to point of almost stalling.

So What am I doing wrong?

I'll start with the most important; Thank you, sir, for your service to your country.

As a fellow 2555 owner, I can tell you that I also am far more familiar with 50+ year-old tractors than with these new luxury models. The 2555 is considered a 'economy' tractor, but man, this thing is like a Cadillac compared to all the other tractors I've owned. I've only used my PTO to turn the hydraulic pump for my FEL-mounted snowblower. Now my particular setup wants to see approx 45 PTO-hp. The 42 PTO-hp our 2555 makes is sufficient for my needs.

For obvious reasons, it is always really cold when I use my blower. Because of this, the hydraulic oil in the 30-gal reservoir tank is also really cold (and you know what that means). when I engage my PTO, it does not clunk and even though I do this at low rpm, it does not stall the engine. It does, however take almost a full 30 minutes before I am able to reach 2,200 rpm operating speed. Yes, I know this is a couple hundred rpm below rated PTO speed, but this is where the blower is most happy.

I am no tractor mechanic, but I perhaps there may be something wrong with either your PTO system or possibly the implement? What does your dealer have to say about this?

I too have a 2555, but HST. My instruction manual said to power all the way down to turtle, then push the button. Mine engages smoothly with when used with a medium duty cutter with slip clutch and a post hole digger. Sorry, but that's all I can add.

Hulka, thank you for the kind words.

The tractor is at the dealer as of today having the 50 hour service done along with a few other repairs, 1 of which it to look at the PTO. When I dropper it off the mechanic came out to talk to me and see what was needed beyond the service. I pointed out a few issues like the hydraulic leaks, poor running when cold and so on, he didn't seem surprised. And them I asked about the PTO, he mentioned the PTO sync button.... I asked him what button.... he said you know the button on the left side of the steering column.... I asked him to show me... when he climbed up in the cab and looked he did a double take and started looking around for some sort of sync button or lever. Nope none there.....

He was puzzled ans said he will need to read up on it.... So for now the jury is still out....

PTO Sync button? That's a new one on me. The only relevant controls I have are:

[Left of steering column]
Hazzard flasher
Cruise
Load Sensing
Lights/turn Signal/Horn
a 3-position switch that controls how abruptly I can change direction

[right of steering column]
PTO
a momentary switch that INCreases or DECreases my cruise control speed

Perhaps PTO Sync is for Shuttle trans only?

Now I'm even more curious. Please keep us posted.

Your tractor is equipped with a hydraulic PTO clutch. I suspect you have an issue with the valve that controls it.

I've heard of lots of machines with solenoid operated pto clutches that depending on their design, just bang engaged like a train hitting a car across the tracks.

On units with no built in feather, or without a way to feather, you are left with ust getting rpm as low as you can without stalling the tractor and then engaging..

good luck

No sync button... just an electric actuator.. set throttle as low as possible and turn it on... its going to hit hard its just the nature of such a system. If you were to take a style pto that you can feather in and slam it into gear as fast as possible it will do the same... or a live pto if you pop the clutch and give it full power at once it will do the same...

That PTO clutch system has a 'Soft start" and a brake. You need to have the dealer to look at that and get some gauges hooked up. I suspect the orifice in the valve is blocked causing the clutch to slam in.
