I have a 2605H 130hrs, oil changed at 50hrs, and just changed fuel filters. My question is this: Has anyone out there had an engine knock? My son was brush hogging the other day, for about 4-5 hours straight, and when he drove back up to the barn, and started to idle down, the engine made a knocking sound, almost like a rod sound. Oil levels was fine, oil still looks very clean. NO ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. It hasn't done it since. I was actually wondering if something had heated up really hot for the first time, but it really wasnt that kind of sound. Any ideas or comments would be helpful. Its a great machine.

Not sure how much commonality there is between my 2011 MF 2660HD and your 2605. The engines are of course different (4cyl Perkins vs your 3 cyl) but I am guessing there is still a lot of commonality in the main chassis and rear end. For many, many years of MF tractors the hydraulic pump that handles the 3pt lift is buried inside the rear chassis. They share a common (alarming if you have not heard it before) load clank that happens when the position control of the 3pt is up too high. Most of the time you can produce the hideous sound on purpose by moving the lever too far up. Most people have the top stop set so that is avoided in day to day operation. It scared the crap outta me when mine was brand new. I gingerly drove it near one of the neighbors who was an old auto mechanic and he was yelling "MY Gawd shut that thing off..." and he figured it was a rod bearing going out.

Then came the relief: a very seasoned parts man at my dealer explained his theory of the noise. [The only theory I have ever found that seems to explain it and make any sense.] He said that there is a pin going thru the 3pt hydraulic pump to keep it from rotating due to the counter forces of shaft input and internal force operating the pump. That can be a plus or minus rotation force on the pump body and in any event has to be prevented/counteracted which is what the pin does. He says the pin has to have some play in order to ever get it in or out. Thus, at certain rpm (more often down near idle as I recall) and with the position control up too high that pin rattles back and forth in it's hole. That hardware is in heavy metal & solid into the big chassis frame which in terms of sounds really includes the engine and sounds like all hell breaking loose at times. I cannot say that is what you heard but it may be.

You can probably run a test and purposely set the position control lever higher than normal while at idle or near idle. Play with it some and you may be able to produce the noise.

Years ago I experimented with mine, found the position where I could begin to start the noise, and then lowered the position lever some and set the stop there to avoid it ever going up that high. I still hear it VERY mild once in a while and listening carefully. Seems to be the nature of the beast and I have had others say that.

Thank You. I think that you might have pointed me in the right direction. I'm going to try to duplicate it tonight.
