Mowing 261 Grooming Mower

I bought a 261 finish mower with a locked up gear box. I was wondering what to expect when I tear it down. I opened the back case and it was completely dry of oil. The housing didn't have a lot of grease on it so I don't know what to expect. The man I bought it from said it just stopped and he didn't want to work on it. The price was too good to pass up. The attachment on it is a little strange as it has pins for the 3-point hitch and also chains for the lift. I was wondering if someone else has used one and how they set it up to float behind the tractor. I will get into the teardown next week.

I had a 272 and a 261 mowers. They were made to attach to the 3pt hitch. The cutting height was simply a matter of adjusting the lower arms to the desired level. Then make sure the trailing wheel set so the rear of the deck was slightly higher than the front, when on level ground. The 272 had gauge wheels on the front, so it didn't scalp the turf when going over uneven ground.

If I remember correctly, there are two or three different gearboxes for that mower. I have one that needed a couple different parts and while I had it torn down, I wanted to put seals in the gearbox.Roundish gearbox case and a squareish one. Gearbox is still off of it, waiting for me to spend about $40 on seals. I don't really have a use for a 5 foot grooming mower but didn't want to send it to the scrap yard, so I got it for a friend to use, but he sold his tractor before I knew about the grooming mower, so it just sits. Another round tuit...
