Mahindra 2615 4x4
Hello! I bought a 2615 gear 4X4 around the first of September. I like it a lot. Unfortunately, I only got about 2 weeks of work on it because I broke my leg (Unrelated to operating the tractor) and had to have surgery. Since then my step son has done all the playing with the new toy.

We have had only one issue that has not repeated itself, but has me curious. On the first weekend we were adjusting the swing controls on the 3 pt hitch and leveling the rotary cutter. The engine was left at a low idle and had about 3.5 hours on it at the time. While we were working, the engine began knocking loudly. One cyl. was obviously having problems! I immediately shut the engine down and started it back up a few minutes later. The knock was still there. I told my step son that it looked like we were going to have to call the dealer to take the tractor back. I got on the tractor to move it out of the way and under the shed and while doing that, the knocking stopped. I let it idle a min or so then drove it around the property at various RPMs. The knocking never came back. The tractor now has about 20 hours on it and no recurrence.

Anyone have any ideas what may have caused this?

I'll bet you had a fuel injector acting up that has since decided to behave.

Have no idea what it was, but if it was an internal engine part, I doubt the knock would have gone away.

Diesel do not like to be idled for a long period of time. They develop what (if I recall correctly) is called wet stacking. What happens is unburnt fuel remains in the cylinder. It causes some pre-ignition, increased compresion ratio and washes the oil off the cylinder wall. My owners manual says something like, do not idle for long periods of time below 1500 rpm.

You might be think'n BS, I see long haul truckers idleing all the time. I don't know about them but my Ford PSD was available with a idle kit. If it detected long periods of idleing it would rause the idle speed. I am 99% sure the Duramax and Cummins from GM and Dodge have the same.

Thanks for the replies. I still don't know what the problem might have been, but I do not believe it will repeat itself.

On a side note, this forum really helped me decide what to buy. I was able to educate myself about this and other brands of tractors, and I think I got the right tractor for my size property and intended uses. The 2615 4X4 cost about the same as smaller JD’s and Kubota’s, and so far has been a real hard working machine. I don’t knock other brands, I know the JD’s and Kubota’s are good tractors, but after reading a lot of posts here (And discounting some of the nasty comments from some of the professional negative posters), I found that most of you who have these 15 series tractors and their Case/IH and Cub Cadet predecessors really like your machines.

Just after taking receipt of my 2615, I lost 3 HUGE limbs out of one of the Live Oak trees in my yard. I trimmed off what I could with my tiny chainsaw and used the tractor and FEL to move the debris. When I got through, I was left with 3 large trunks that were really too big for my saw. I hooked up some chains to the FEL and moved 2 with no problem. The tractor could only pick up the third biggest limb about 2 or 3 inches off the ground; but using 1st gear and LOW, I was able to move it about 150 feet and out of the front yard. Even at what was the maximum capacity of the lift, the tractor with a rotary mower in back was stable and showed no signs of tipping.

We have also mowed between the planted pines where the previous owner of the property had let the weeds and saplings take over. I mowed down stuff 5 or 6 feet tall and up to 2 inched thick. After I broke my leg (Again, unrelated to the tractor), my step-son has used the FEL to push over and pile up the saplings too big to mow down. I have moved a bunch of sand and dirt to fill in holes and a 250 foot long trench where we laid electrical cable.

I cannot wait until my leg is healed so I can climb back on (Gotta push the step-son off the seat) and play some more. I can’t work the clutch right now with a busted left leg!

Hope you guys enjoy and do good work with your tractors no matter what color they are.

Ed7Oaks,

I hope you have a speedy recovery. Please keep in touch here. I like to hear what other Mahindra owners in general, and 2615 owners in particular, are doing with their tractors. I just got a 5' KK Kutter for mine, so I'll be testing that out some. And, I'm still finding new uses for the FEL every day.

Water in fuel can cause this. Even with a seperator etc it can happen. Check your fuel bowl just to be sure.
