27 yo woman loses arm in PHD accident

A young, recently married woman lost her arm and received multiple fractures to remaining arm and legs and head injuries when her gloved hand was caught in the PTO shaft of a post hole digger.

Not far west of here the accident was. Fortunately she was working close to the homestead and was able to be carried to the homestead to await the rescue chopper.

Apparently she was spun around several times.........

Yet another nasty accident to show the danger of mishandling these implements.

I suspect gloves should be left off when working with a PHD. One of my co-workers is missing the third finger on his right hand. He was wearing gloves while operating a lathe several years ago and his hand got caught in the machinery. Tore off his finger and yanked the ligaments and tendons out of his right arm all the way up to the elbow. Ouch!

Where (when) I worked, we had a carpenter shop, and the carpenters were required by the safety committee to wear gloves when handling lumber (previous splinters were the result of this safety order). So the worn leather glove catches a saw tooth on the big table saw, ripping into the glove and pulling the hand into the saw blade with less than desireable results. Now coomes the new order to remove the gloves when operating the saw or other equipment (such as a lathe).
Sorry to hear about the woman. I'm guessing she was helping position and guide the PHD for someone operating the tractor?

Neil, tragic story. Reminds of being a child and seeing the mother of one of my classmates killed when her long hair became entangled in a portable cement mixer. I was about 10 yrs old at the time and will never forget it.
