273HST clanging ringing noise

Just bought this 2006 273 HST with FEL and backhoe. 400 hrs. Everything works great but it makes a ringing sound that goes away when rpm is increased to 1500 rpm or so. Does anyone know what causes this? I searched but couldn't find anything. Thx

Would check and see if it had the drive shaft upgraded. Mine never made any noise but I replaced it before it got too bad.

I Think I have the old style shaft. I don't think the noise is coming from there because it doesn't turn when the tractor is in neutral. I am going to get the new driveshaft for sure.

check the shaft between engine and hydrostat

The shaft always turns because it runs the H-stat pump. If you have the old shaft you need to change it before it strips the splines off the shafts. At least don't put a heavy load on the PTO or do heavy loader work until you change it.

Open the hood and see if the sound goes away. Then check if there is wear (notch) in the slot of the hood support. When the hood is closed the support shakes at low rpm making the sound. As the notch gets deeper the sound increases in amplitude. I have TYM 330 so I am just guessing that the hood is similar to yours.

I'm digging a trench about 200ft long with the backhoe and and filling it with gravel. I better get that shaft ordered. Thanks for the replies, the sound dies seem to be coming from the hood area. I will check that when I get home. Thx again.

The noise turned out to be a broken exhaust pipe banging against the alternator. It looks like it broke from vibration and a lack of a support bracket.

Had that problem also. Warranty took care of it for me with an upgraded muffler.
