276 clutch trouble

Here is an exploded view of your clutch assembly, and part listing to match.
If you have approx. 1" to 1 1/2" of free travel in your clutch pedal, then it may be internal. ie; Broken spring(s), release lever, clutch disc hanging up on main shaft, worn pilot bushing, etc.
You don't mention if it wants to creep after tapping the brake... If not, I'm thinking it may be the disc hanging up on the shaft. I'm thinking if it were a broken spring, or lever, it would have a tendency to try and keep pulling itself.
Then again, on my Case 310B backhoe, the previous owner left the inspection plug out of the bellhousing/torque tube. This allowed apparently mice, and ground squirrels a place to build their winter home. When I split the tractor to replace the engines rear main seal, I found about a half of a 5 gallon bucket full of, uh.., greasy/oily, 'stuff". Leaves, string, walnut shells, etc. all wrapped up in and around the pressure plate... There was a definite improvement in the clutch, after cleaning it out...
Again, if you have the proper free travel in your pedal, sounds like you may need to split the tractor, and see what the problem is. Not all that bad of a job, if you have the proper place, tools, blocking, etc. and a good manual.
